Anne Hathaway Wasn't the First Choice for the Lead in 'The Devil Wears Prada'

When Anne Hathaway appeared on RuPaul’s Drag Race she was sure to spill some “tea” with the contestants. That includes the details of her role with The Devil Wears Prada, a movie where she was reportedly the ninth choice for the lead.

Here’s what we know about this actor and her acting advice to the contestants.

Anne Hathaway appeared on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’

This actor is an unapologetic fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race and drag performers, even crying when she met RuPaul on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. She shared her support for queens like Monét X Change and even expressed interest in being a guest judge.

With season 13 of the series, Hathaway finally appeared in the Werk Room. Kind of. Hathaway spoke to the queens via the “She-mail” screen, offering insight and support for their upcoming musical challenge.

One of the contestants, Rosé, asked if there were any roles she had to “fight tooth and nail for.” Hathaway laughed and responded, “How much time do you have?”

“I will give you some tea: I was the ninth choice for Devil Wears Prada,” she continued. “But I got it! Hang in there, never give up.”

Anne Hathaway portrayed one of the main characters in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’

Yahoo reported that hot off of the heels of Mean Girls and The Notebook, Rachel McAdams was the first choice for this role. She declined the role, stating in a 2007 interview with Elle US that she wasn’t passionate about the movie and the role.

Hathaway, on the other hand, was so passionate about Andy that she traced the words ‘hire me’ in the sand of a zen garden plant, according to Yahoo. Of course, she earned the part and The Devil Wears Prada became a fan-favorite comedy about working in fashion.

This film predominantly told the story of an aspiring journalist, Andy, who gets a rare position at a fashion magazine — working for the one and only Miranda Priestly. This editor-in-chief was portrayed by Meryl Streep. The Devil Wears Prada, based on the novel by former magazine assistant Lauren Weisberger, also starred Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.

Anne Hathaway also appeared in movies like ‘Ella Enchanted’ and ‘The Princess Diaries’

As the cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race pointed out, Hathaway appeared in several productions aside from The Devil Wears Prada. In 2013, she earned the Academy Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie musical, Les Misérables.

She earned the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for the same film. Anne Hathaway also starred in several Disney-related projects, including Ella Enchanted, The Princess Diaries, and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.
