Hilaria Baldwin defended by step-daughter after revealing real name
Hilaria Baldwin has been defended by her step-daughter Ireland Baldwin after admitting her real name and the truth about her Spanish heritage.
In a video shared on Sunday, Hilaria revealed that her real name is Hillary and she was born in Boston not Majorca following speculation she was faking her Spanish accent.
The fitness instructor, who is married to Alec Baldwin, explained that she often puts on the Spanish accent in different scenarios and has wanted to ensure her children are bilingual.
Ireland, whose mother is Alec’s ex Kim Basinger, spoke out to defend her stepmother in light of the shocking revelation.
The 27-year-old wrote in her Instagram stories: ‘It’s so pathetic that anyone would want to play detective and dig that deep into someone’s life they don’t know anything about, don’t know how they were raised, don’t know who they were actually raised by.
‘It’s just kind of sad and pathetic. And also, it’s like the holidays, people are depressed, people are going through a lot. I know I’m going through a lot personally. And the last thing we really need to do is start s**t and gossip about something is just so, so stupid. And about someone that nobody even really knows.’
Praising Hilaria’s character, Ireland added: ‘She could be a malicious, terrible, horrible human who tears people down but she isn’t. Hilaria is a wonderful mother who takes great care of her kids and she takes great care of my dad and that’s all that really matters to me.’
A discussion had mounted online about whether Hilaria was truly Spanish and faking her accent, with some of her former classmates sharing videos pointing to inconsistencies. An online biography also claimed Hilaria was born in Majorca and raised in Boston but was vague in the details.
In her lengthy video, Hilaria explained: ‘A bit about me. I’ve seen chatter online questioning my identity and culture. This is something I take very seriously, and for those who are asking — I’ll reiterate my story, as I’ve done many times before.
‘I was born in Boston and grew up spending time with my family between Massachusetts and Spain. My parents and siblings live in Spain and I chose to live here, in the USA.
‘We celebrate both cultures in our home — Alec and I are raising our children bilingual, just as I was raised. This is very important to me. I understand that my story is a little different, but it is mine, and I’m very proud of it.’
Hilaria, 36, later stated that she was a ‘white girl’, adding: ‘Let’s be very clear that Europe has a lot of white people in there and my family is white. Ethnically, I am a mix of many, many, many things. Culturally, I grew up with two cultures so it’s really as simple as that.’
Explaining that there was ‘a lot of back and forth’ throughout her life, Hilaria described herself as a ‘different kind of Bostonian’ and that she ‘can’t change [her] background’ but she’s ‘proud’ of who she is.
Yeah I’m a different kind of Bostonian but that’s who I am, and you kind of can’t change your background – nor would I want to – I’m really, really proud of who I am
Hilaria married Beetlejuice actor Alec in 2012 and they share five children.
