How Many Royal Pets Are There?
Queen Elizabeth is still mourning the death of Prince Philip and likely will be for a very long time. The monarch’s spouse of over 70 years died on April 9 and his loved ones buried him shortly thereafter. But now that the world has moved on since his death, the queen is presumably still trying to adjust to life without him. And while her children have rallied around her since the tragedy, the queen may have come to rely on her pets for comfort, per Hello!
Queen Elizabeth received corgi puppies as gifts during March. In addition to her beloved Candy, a cross between a dachshund, she now has two new pooches to care for, a welcome distraction during the time of her grief. Penny Junor, a royal biographer told The Sun, “They have over the years been closer to her than any human being.” Junor also threw some shade when she added, “The corgis are intensely loyal and loving and they have never let her down. And of course corgis also seldom rush off to LA to give interviews,” seemingly alluding to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Oprah Winfrey interview.
But the British monarch isn’t the only royal who loves animals. Her children and grandchildren also adore their fur (and feather) babies. Let’s see how many animal family members are part of The Firm.
British royals crazy about their animals
Animals are constantly coming into this family! Prince Harry and Meghan Markle set up a coop for their chickens because the Duchess of Sussex has “always wanted chickens,” as the duke told Oprah Winfrey (via Architectural Digest). The pair rescued the birds from a factory farm and brought them home to “Archie’s Chick Inn.” Harry and Meghan also have a beagle and a Labrador called Guy and Pula, respectively.
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, meanwhile, are the proud parents of Bluebell and Beth. The two Jack Russell rescues regularly accompany Prince Charles and Camilla to events. According to People, the pooches were adopted in 2011 and 2012 as young pups. The Earl and Countess of Wessex have three pets: a black Labrador, a Cocker Spaniel, and a tortoise. Hello! reports that Prince Edward revealed that they had the unusual pet during a video call. “We have two dogs and we’ve also got a tortoise – who basically runs the house!” Princess Anne, on the other hand, favors her English Bull Terriers, even though one of her dogs attacked and killed Queen Elizabeth’s corgi, Pharos, in 2003, per BBC. For those who don’t know, Anne is also a champion horse rider, per Horse and Hound.
Kate Middleton’s brother, James Middleton, gifted Prince George, Prince Louis, and Princess Charlotte a new puppy at Kensington Palace, according to Daily Mail. The family dog Lupo, a Cocker Spaniel, died in 2020. “The new puppy is adorable and the whole family are besotted,” a source said.
