Jeremy Clarkson blasted as a 'idiot' for 'stupid' tweet about heatwave

‘France is literally on fire’: Jeremy Clarkson blasted as an ‘absolute idiot’ for ‘stupid’ tweet about heatwave

  • The Met Office has warned that temperatures could rise even further to 43C (109F) tomorrow
  • Trains have been cancelled, hospital appointments axed and schools closed amid warnings that even healthy people could die
  • Met Office chief executive Penny Endersby confirmed ‘we may well see the hottest day in the UK in history’ today
  • Jeremy wrote: ‘It’s very hot in the south of France but so far as I know, there’s no DefCon 8 level 3 killer death heatwave warning in place’
  • The comment was seen as a sly dig at the UK government’s response to the heatwave, and received over 47,000 likes
  • However, he was wrong. Conditions in France have sparked dozens of fires and western regions in particular suffering a ‘heat apocalypse’

Jeremy Clarkson has come under fire for suggesting that Britain is overreacting to the heatwave across the country.

The Met Office has warned that temperatures could rise even further to 43C (109F) tomorrow – with trains already cancelled, hospital appointments axed and schools closed amid warnings that even healthy people could die.

Its chief executive Penny Endersby confirmed ‘we may well see the hottest day in the UK in history’ today – beating the record of 38.7C (101.7F) set in Cambridge in July 2019 – but tomorrow is now expected to be even warmer.

Backlash: Jeremy Clarkson has come under fire for suggesting that Britain is overreacting to the heatwave across the country

With the UK set to be hotter than the Sahara Desert today, transport links in London were already grinding to a halt due to train cancellations – while roads could melt and bosses have urged employees to work from home.

However, Jeremy, 62, seemed to think that the reaction was over the top, and tweeted to his 7.7 million followers: ‘It’s very hot in the south of France but so far as I know, there’s no DefCon 8 level 3 killer death heatwave warning in place.’

The comment was seen as a sly dig at the UK government’s response to the heatwave, and received over 47,000 likes.

However, it also attracted a lot of backlash from people who pointed out that Jeremy was, in fact, incorrect.

All-time records are set to tumble across much of western France with 111F (44C) possible near Bordeaux in what forecasters have branded a ‘heat apocalypse’.

The extreme conditions have sparked dozens of fires, with crews battling a ‘monster’ blaze in Gironde which has forced 16,000 people to evacuated and torched 14,000 acres since it began a week ago.

Another 3,500 people were evacuated today as strong winds whipped up the flames.

Twitter users responded to the tweet by pointing this out, with one saying: ‘France is literally on fire jeremy.’

Another echoed: ‘They’ve literally evacuated 14,000 people from Southern France Jeremy. Because it’s on fire.’

In hot water: However, it also attracted a lot of backlash from people who pointed out that Jeremy was, in fact, incorrect

A third argued: ‘So far as you know is not very far. There are actually major fires, evacuations, and school cancellations, but do keep your narrative that protecting people from apocalyptic heat is a weakness.’

While a fourth agreed, writing: ‘The stupidest thing about this take is there is literally a high alert in at least 16 regions in the south of France… Plus two major forest fires caused by the heat’.

And a fifth blasted Jeremy, writing: ‘jeremy clarkson is funny when he is driving cars but an absolute idiot when it comes to politics and climate change’.
