Katy Perry suffers hilarious American Idol blunder as she falls off chair in Ariel costume

Katy Perry took a hilarious fall during the latest instalment of American Idol.

The American pop star, who recently revealed how stars wee while wearing difficult outfits on the red carpet, was dressed as The Little Mermaid's Ariel during the competitive singing series' Disney Night on Sunday.

However, the stiff outfit proved problematic from the beginning as she was helped to the seat by fellow judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan and host Ryan Seacrest.

And just as Ryan began introducing the first contestant, he was interrupted by a dramatic and loud crashing sound before the camera panned around to show Katy on the ground and her fishtail up in the air.

The studio burst into laughter as Lionel, Luke and Ryan helped her up.

Ryan asked: "Are you okay? Are you alright?" to which a red-faced Katy replied: "Yes".

As Katy took a drink of water to compose herself, the audience showed their support as they broke out into the chant: "Katy! Katy! Katy!"

Katy's fall had viewers in hysterics at home, with one person tweeting: "Watching Katy Perry fall off the chair dressed as Ariel is the funniest thing of the week #AmericanIdol."

Someone else said: "Not Katy falling off the chair hahahahaha #AmericanIdol."

And a concerned third fan wrote: "Katy, hope you are okay after that fall, you got up like nothing happened! #DisneyNight #AmericanIdol".

Katy also poked fun at the incident, tweeting ahead of the show: "Magic mirror on the wall. Disney Night's the best of all.

"West coast, tune in for a rerun. Maybe you'll see Ariel fall on her bum #americanidol."

Meanwhile, Katy recently lifted the lift on how celebrities use the toilet when they attend a glamorous red carpet event in a difficult ensemble.

"There was a lot of self-control, practice, and GoGirls. Do you know those little contraptions where you then get to urinate standing up?", she told Ellen DeGeneres.

Speaking of a shewee – a silicone funnel you can use to aim your wee away from your feet, Katy continued: "I've used them in several music videos.

"I always find myself in this predicament where I have a very extravagant, lavish, unrealistic, impractical costume on."
