Emmerdale star Paige Sandhu joined the ITV soap back in September as Manpreet Sharma’s younger sister Meena Jutla. The nurse has since gradually unveiled her true colours and according to the show’s boss Kate Brooks more fireworks are set to come. Upon accepting her role after auditions, the 24-year-old claims bosses worried she might not be up for playing such an evil character.

The actress said she had no idea how dark her role was going to be when she first auditioned for the Dales.

She spilled: “I could tell that she wasn’t a good-hearted soul, but it was never mentioned that she was a killer.

“So when they phoned to tell me that I’d got the part they wanted to know if it was OK with me.”

However, producers didn’t need to worry as Paige accepted the offer.

Recalling her response, she added to The Mirror: “I went, ‘That sounds really great!’

“She’s such an amazing character. She excites me. She goes to such dark places and she’s so different from me.”

The actress added she was “having the best time” in her “fun” new acting role.

So far on the Dales, she has pushed Leanna Cavanagh (played by Mimi Slinger) off a bridge as she admitted to killing her best friend Nadine Butler in previous years.

Meena had previously claimed that Nadine had taken her own life.

Back in June, viewers got a taste of her erratic behaviour when she tried to kill Andrea Tate’s (Anna Nightingale) pet dog Princess.

Her plan to cause conflict between Andrea and Charles (Kevin Mathurin) backfired after David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden) spotted the dog and alerted Charles, who took the pooch to the vet.

Emmerdale producer Kate recently described Paige’s character as a “whirlwind”.

She added to ITV: “Her seemingly caring façade belies her true persona; a woman with a murky past and no conscience.

“Malevolent Meena will wreak havoc in the village and once she has you in her sights, no one is safe from her devious and dangerous machinations.

“This storyline will see the viewers gripped as they realise that this is a woman who is capable of anything and everything.”

In upcoming scenes this week, Meena focuses on her next victim, love rival Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins).

Ahead of her Emmerdale stint, she was in an episode of Endeavour and two of Doctors.

After years of struggling to find work, she said: “The anxiety took the form of insomnia. Life was hard and a struggle.”

Paige went on to say she is now in a happier place and has turned to meditation, pilates and yoga to help with her mental health.

Emmerdale continues tonight at 7pm on ITV.
