The C.D.C.’s recent investigation of a coronavirus outbreak in Provincetown, Mass., in which most of those infected had been immunized is changing the way many are approaching the pandemic.
Recent data from the organization found that not only could vaccinated people get infected with the Delta variant — though instances remain rare — but they could also potentially spread the virus just as much as an unvaccinated person.
What are the practical implications of this new information?

A recent report from the C.D.C. strongly suggested that fully immunized people with so-called breakthrough infections of the Delta variant can spread the virus to others just as readily as unvaccinated people.
According to an internal C.D.C. presentation, the Delta variant is much more contagious, more likely to break through protections afforded by the vaccines and may cause more severe disease than other known versions of the virus.
