'Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba' Film Surpasses 'Spirited Away' as #1 Film Ever in Japan

Meeting early speculation, the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba film has now officially surpassed Spirited Away as the number one film ever in Japan.

At the end of last week, the theatrical feature for Koyoharu Gotōge’s hit Demon Slayer manga/anime sold 24,049,907 tickets, earning ¥32,478,895,850 JPY (approximately $314 million USD) in total domestically. In just its 73rd day of showings, the film has overtaken Hayao Miyazaki‘s beloved Studio Ghibli film Spirited Away for the biggest film in Japan in history. During its original 2002 run, Spirited Away generated ¥30.8 billion JPY (approximately $297,024,928 USD) and reaching 31.68 billion (approximately $305,517,168 USD) with its recent revival screenings.
