Hayao Miyazaki Comes Out of Retirement for His Final Studio Ghibli Film
Hayao Miyazaki is back in the director’s chair for the first time since 2013’s The Wind Rises with his last Studio Ghibli film.
In an interview with the New York Times, the filmmaker shared that he has been working on the new movie for the last four years and that it is based on Genzaburo Yoshino’s novel How Do You Live? The 1937 title follows a young boy from Tokyo who deals with the recent loss of his father and is supposedly Miyazaki’s favorite book from “childhood.”
When pressed about his decision to come out of retirement, he simply answered, “Because I wanted to.” Miyazaki did not confirm the title of the film either, but did share, “I am making this movie because I do not have the answer.”
Toshio Suzuki, the co-founder of Studio Ghibli and producer, explained that the upcoming movie is “fantasy on a grand scale.”
Stay tuned for a trailer and release date for Miyazaki’s next film.
Elsewhere in entertainment, Netflix’s Hellbound has surpassed Squid Game as the most-watched TV series in a span of 24 hours.
