Jeremy Clarkson's Diddly Squat shop closes down after Meghan controversy
Jeremy Clarkson’s Diddly Squat Farm Shop will close its doors until February, it has been announced.
The closure of the store comes after the backlash over Clarkson’s recent controversial column around Meghan Markle.
Clarkson, 62, expressed his hatred of the Duchess of Sussex in th article, in which he said he fantasised about her being ‘paraded naked through the streets’.
The former Top Gear presenter remarked that he hated Markle on a ‘cellular level’, before comparing her to incarcerated serial killer Rose West.
Despite being known for being outspoken, Clarkson’s comments still drew 20,000 IPSO complaints and the column was removed from The Sun’s website.
As the backlash grew, Clarkson said in a statement that he had ‘put his foot in it’ and said he would be much more careful in the future.
Now, a week after the controversy, Clarkson’s Diddly Squat shop has announced that it will be closing until the middle of February.
On Instagram, a statement said: ‘[Today] is a great day for a trip to Diddly. Last few days before we close until February 10th’.
The statement has left some people wondering whether the closure is routine, or whether it’s due to the reaction to Clarkson’s column.
Since tweeting on December 19 that he was ‘horrified to have caused so much hurt’, Clarkson hasn’t made any further posts.
The Diddly Squat Instagram account has continued to post, however, despite taking a short break over the Christmas holiday.
And it appears that a lengthy closure at this time of year is routine, with Diddly Squat having shut its doors for the entirety of January and February in the past.
In 2021, the farm’s shop remained open until New Year’s Eve, after which it put the shutters up until March – a longer break than the current one.
Many of Clarkson’s followers said they would be visiting the farm once it reopens, while other Instagram users continued to criticise his comments about the Duchess.
In happier news on the farm, Diddly Squat co-host Kaleb Cooper has announced that he got engaged to partner Taya earlier this week.
