Meghan Markle Says Royal Life Hasn't Been 'Easy' & We Feel for Her

It’s easy to think that being a celebrity prepares a person for life in the public eye as a royal. But, as we know, Hollywood scrutiny can’t hold a candle to the British royal media. A new video shows Meghan Markle acknowledging the public backlash to Pharrell, whom she met for the first time at London’s Lion King premiere. And unsurprisingly, the Suits star turned Duchess of Sussex hinted that the transition has been difficult.

Lately, Megan can hardly cover her face while sneezing without being accused of “diva” behavior regarding privacy. British talking heads took issue with the fact that Prince Harry and Meghan chose a private christening for baby Archie. Then the tabloids took her to task for reportedly requesting pictures not be taken when she attended Wimbledon to watch her pal Serena Williams. So, when she stepped out on Sunday to attend The Lion King premiere alongside Harry, Meghan was likely already bracing herself for the headlines-to-come.

At the premiere, she mingled with members of the cast and other Hollywood A-listers, including Pharrell. That convo made its way to Twitter, courtesy of fan account Royal Suitor. And although the tweets are protected, the UK’s The Sun reports that, in speaking with Pharrell, Meghan responds to the music producer’s support by saying, “Thank you, they don’t make it easy.”

The rest of the conversation provides context clues. Pharrell kicked things off, telling Meghan and Harry, “So happy for your union. Love is amazing. It’s wonderful. Don’t ever take that for granted but what it means in today’s climate, I just wanted to tell you it’s so significant for so many of us. Seriously. We cheer you guys on.” So, the logical conclusion here is that the proverbial ‘they” Meghan is referring to must be the tabloids and the keyboard warriors who serve as constant critics.

And, let’s be honest, they haven’t made it easy for Meghan. But, according to the people closest to her, the negative publicity isn’t an accurate reflection of who the Duchess really is. “What’s so frustrating is that you hear these stories and there’s no truth to them,” Meghan’s makeup artist and close friend Daniel Martin said in a CBS News special in May. “It’s not the same person. In the years I’ve known her, the years I’ve worked with her, she’s never had a diva fit. Never.”
