Take an Inside Look at the New Blue Bottle Coffee at Shanghai's Kerry Centre

Expanding its operations in mainland China, Oakland, California-based Blue Bottle Coffee has now opened a new location in Shanghai. Serving as Blue Bottle’s second China venture, following the opening of its first Schemata Architects’ designed location also in Shanghai, the new opening is located in the city’s downtown district and inside the Jing An Kerry Centre.

Designed by Japanese studio Keiji Ashizawa Design, the space is designed to celebrate local culture with a focus on traditional Chinese roof tiles. Taking over the Kerry Centre’s first and second floors, the 13,000 handmade brick tiles were used to line the bar counter, stairwell wall and lounge of the cafe. The semi-circular bricks were made in the neighboring city of Yixing, known for its clayware manufacturing, with a new process that created a unique reflective effect.

Centered around the coffee bar, the space is designed to interact with the act of coffee making at every turn. Accenting design elements include circular recessed seating, dark brown leather, raw structural concrete, and natural oak wood furniture.
