‘Clueless’ costume designer is still giving Alicia Silverstone advice
Alicia Silverstone gets fashion advice from the costume designer of her comedy classic “Clueless” 25 years later.
“We’re still close friends, she texts me pictures of things she might wear on red carpets,” Mona May, who created Silverstone’s look as Cher in the film, told UK magazine Tatler.
May added that behind the scenes of the movie, Silverstone “was a young ingenue, she had been in one or two music videos and she didn’t have a lot of experience with film. She was already then, at 18, an activist. She would come in in her sweats with her dogs and she really had to learn about high fashion and designer clothes and how to become that character.”
In the film, Silverstone’s character had a whopping 60 costume changes, while Stacey Dash’s character, Dionne, had 50 and Brittany Murphy, as Tai, had 40. “I had to create a giant chart with all of the outfits printed,” May said. Perhaps Silverstone’s most iconic look was Cher’s yellow plaid Dolce & Gabbana suit in the film’s opening. May revealed that the suit was originally blue, but “she needed to pop, and the blue just wasn’t popping.”
May’s credits also include “Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion” and “Never Been Kissed.”
