A dermatologist has revealed why the sun and salt water can be good for your skin, after Hailey Bieber declared her complexion is always at its ‘best’ when she has ‘spent time in the ocean’.

Melbourne skin expert Dr Shyamalar Gunatheesan explained that a dip in the sea has many anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial benefits, and it can also help hugely with those struggling with acne and psoriasis.

‘It is thought that blue light, which is part of the visible light spectrum of sunlight, is absorbed by porphyrins produced by acne-causing bacteria,’ Dr Gunatheesan told BeautyHeaven.

‘Exposure to nature and the meditative properties of the ocean work synergistically to reduce stress which then has a positive impact on our skin health.’ 

While the dermatologist said you should not be spending too much time in the water or in direct sunlight if you want good skin, she said ‘two to three’ sessions of between 15 and 20 minutes each per week is good for vitamin D levels.

’15-20 minutes will give you the optimal blue light exposure, as well as the anti-inflammatory effects of sea water,’ she said.  

Any more and you risk giving your skin sun damage or prematurely ageing your complexion.

Dr Gunatheesan isn’t the only proponent of salt water for improved skin.

Previously, health experts at The Conversation revealed salt water has significantly higher amounts of minerals, including sodium, chloride, sulphate, magnesium and calcium – which can make it useful for skin conditions such as psoriasis. 

Bathing in natural mineral-rich water, including in mineral springs, is called balneotherapy and has long been used to treat psoriasis. 

Salt water also has benefits for eczema, another immune-mediated condition.

What are the seven ingredients for a youthful look? 

1. SPF

2. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C)

3. Niacinimide (vitamin B3)

4. Resveratrol

5. Hyaluronic acid

6. Squalane

7. Retinol 

Previously, dermatologist Dr Giulia D’Anna told FEMAIL that there are seven age-defying ingredients you should be incorporating into your regime for a youthful look.

These include SPF, Ascorbic acid (vitamin C), Niacinimide (vitamin B3) and Resveratrol.

Resveratrol is a natural antioxidant which Dr Giulia said is found in ‘high amounts amongst the skin of grapes and in red wine’.

Elsewhere, the dermatologist said you need to look for skin products with ingredients including Hyaluronic acid, Squalane and Retinol.

‘Retinol is a form of vitamin A, that has medical studies proving its effectiveness on skin,’ Dr Giulia said.

Retinol works by speeding up the cell renewal process, and therefore removing dead skin cells and replacing them with new ones in the process.
