Hair removal is a personal choice and how often you remove your hair depends on preference, how quickly your hair grows, and how sensitive your skin is. chatted to Dr Baldeep Farmah, medical director at Dr Aesthetica clinic in Birmingham to find out everything you need to know about leg shaving.

Your body hair grows at different rates and you might need to shave one area more than another, and this is because hair grows in cycles.

Dr Farmah said: “The hair on your arm and leg has a cycle of about 30 to 45 days, as opposed to your head, which has a cycle of two to six years.

“This is also why body hair doesn’t grow as long as the hair on your head.”

What area of your body do you have to shave most frequently? It’s probably your underarms.

Dr Farmah explained: “On average, we shave our underarms twice as often as our legs.

“Leg hair begins to grow again on average after around 24 to 72 hours, whereas armpit hair starts to grow much sooner and grows up to 0.27mm a day.”

How often should you shave your legs?

How often you shave your legs is up to you. There is no set rule and it totally depends on a number of factors.

Dr Farmah said: “How quickly hair grows depends on the area of the body. For example, because armpit hair tends to grow 50 percent faster than leg hair, you might shave your underarms more often if you want to maintain a clean shave feel.

“How often you need to shave your legs is up to your preference and also depends on your hair type and growth.”

However, even though hair removal is a personal choice, there is such a thing as shaving too often.

Dr Farmah said: “The most common choice is to shave your legs daily, and if you are shaving more than once a day due to excessive hair, it is worth speaking to your GP.”

Excessive or rapid hair growth signals a possible underlying health condition.

On top of that, Dr Farmah noted that having to shave too often can irritate your skin.

He said: “When your skin becomes more vulnerable, there’s an increased risk of infection, especially if you get scratched or cut whilst shaving.”

If you want to have smooth legs all the time, shaving isn’t the best hair removal method.

Dr Farmah explained: “If you are tired of painful waxing, endless & tedious shaving or messy hair removal creams then my go to is laser hair removal.
