Vinegar, soda crystals, and baking soda are all frequently used to get rid of bad odours and detergent buildup in washing machines. But how do you clean your washing machine the right way? From the advice of Mrs Hinch to videos by TikTokers, here are five things you need to know about cleaning your washing machine
White vinegar and bicarbonate of soda
According to Mrs Hinch, you should start cleaning your machine by cleaning behind the drawer.
She goes in with her Sonic Scrubber and uses a sponge to soak up the old smelly water.
Then, she cleans the rubber rim of your machine with bathroom spray.
Then, add a cupful of white vinegar and a scoop of bicarbonate of soda to the drum.
She finally runs a spin cycle on hot, and that’s it!

Yep, you need to clean the drawer as well as the drum.
On Mrs Hinch’s Instagram story today, she recommended using Flash bathroom to clean your washing machine drawer.
She captioned the video: “I’ve always used Flash bathroom to clean my washing machine drawer.
“I know it’s supposed to be used to remove soap scum in the bathroom but I find it works perfectly removing leftover old fabric conditioners.
“I don’t like using anything strong like bleach because I’ve been there and tried it and my clothes came out like tie-dye.
“Stick to a good soap scum remover, it’ll work fine.”
The cleaning expert used a Sonic Scrubber to get rid of buildup in the drawer and followed up with her Jamie brush to clean the small holes.
Soda crystals and Zoflora
Another trick stolen from Mrs Hinch and praised by clean-freaks all over Tik Tok is using soda crystals and Zoflora.
Simply pour a generous amount of soda crystals in the empty washing machine drum and shut the door.
Then, pour Zoflora in the drawer and run an empty hot wash.
This should be done weekly to keep build-up of limescale, old detergent, and dirt at bay.

A video by Tik Tok’s @mommachelle which has over 280,000 likes reveals you are actually supposed to drain your machine.
She said: “Did you know you’re supposed to drain and clean your washing machine every six weeks?”
On Google, search for the type of washing machine you have followed by three words: clean, drain, and pump.
Follow the instructions. Usually, you’ll need a towel, a bowl, and a large water pitcher.
Normally you’ll need to pull out the drain hose, point it up, pull out the plug, and then drain it into the bucket.
Clean the outside
Cleaning the exterior of your washing machine is really easy.
This is a super quick chore that will get rid of fingerprints and detergent marks in no time.
Most people use an all-purpose cleaner or a mix of vinegar and lemon juice.
Simply wipe down the outside with a rag and the cleaner, and then scrub the inside of the door.
You can use an old toothbrush to get into the tight spots.
