Inside Travis Barkers fear of flying after fatal crash and how Kourtney helped him overcome it

Newly engaged Travis Barker and Kourtney Kardashian have lived life in the fast lane where their romance is concerned.

However despite being confident in his love for Kourtney, Travis isn't confident when it comes to another aspect of his life – flying.

The Blink-182 drummer has had to travel a great deal as part of his rocker career, but he hasn't been able to fly due to his fear over the years.

Travis' fear came about following his involvement in a deadly plane crash in 2008, which saw four people killed, including the two pilots as well as his security guard, Charles Still and personal assistant, Chris Baker.

Travis and Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein survived the horror crash, with Adam then tragically dying just months later from a drug overdose.

The crash involved a chartered Learjet 60 – roughly half the size of Kylie Jenner's private jet, the latter of which Travis ended up flying in recently, combatting his fear for the first time since the crash.

Travis' fear started way before the crash, with the drummer having had a fear for flying since he was a child.

The plane crash

The aircraft Travis rode on crashed in South Carolina during takeoff, due to "greatly underinflated tires."

In his 2015 memoir Can I Say: Living Large, Cheating Death, and Drums, Drums, Drums, Travis described the aircraft as "small as f–k."

The star has spoken out about the horrifying experience in interview, saying it was his "biggest fear coming true."

During an emotionally charged chat with Joe Rogan for his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, Travis described the harrowing events.

"When I jumped through the emergency exit when the plane blew up, I was in such a hurry to exit the plane I jumped right into the jet, which is full of fuel.

"My whole body lit up. I had jet fuel in my whole body. I burped jet fuel for almost three months (after).

"When I jumped into the jets … I started running … I was ripping off my clothes because that's what my instinct told me to do … but little did I know I was still on fire because I was soaked in jet fuel."

He continued: "My right foot almost didn't make it. That was the thing that was most soaked was my shoes and socks.

"I was running towards a highway and I hear some guy yelling, 'Stop, drop and roll', and I heard it through all the chaos of sirens and everything.

"I stopped, dropped and rolled, and the only thing still on fire was my feet. So they were on fire the longest."

Recovery

Travis underwent 27 surgeries and skin grafts after the accident and spent over 11 weeks in hospital.

He continued to say on the podcast: "After my accident … I was four months in a hospital being fed morphine every day.

"When I was in the hospital, I was on so many drugs I didn't even know my two friends had passed away.

"I didn't know the pilots had passed away. I didn't remember anything.

"I kept thinking everyone was in the hospital, including the two pilots and including my best friends. I thought everyone was in different rooms until two weeks before I left. Then I went crazy … I wasn't in a good place.

"I was kind of crazy. I was suicidal.

"I did a lot of post-traumatic therapy when I was in the hospital to calm things down after my surgery. Over time … I started to feel better."

Travis lost most of his tattoos as a result of the ordeal, and described himself as "a mess" at the time.

He added: "In about 11 of my 30 surgeries in the burns centre, I woke up swinging on doctors. I'd be opened up and just go crazy.

"I would try get off the table … I don't think I knew what was going on, but they just couldn't give me enough medication to knock me out because I'd been self-medicating for so long and abusing meds for so long. I'd just wake up in the middle of anaesthesia."

Travis flying now

Travis hadn't flown since the crash. That was until August 14 2021 when he joined now-fiancee Kourtney Kardashian, her mum Kris Jenner, and Kris' partner Corey Gamble on Kylie Jenner's private jet.

The family flew flew from Camarillo, Calif. to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in what was Travis' first flight since 2008.

Sharing a romantic snap on Instagram, Travis held Kourtney in his arms as she hugged him in a yellow dress.

Travis captioned the photo: "With you anything is possible," while standing in font of Kylie Jenner's private plane.

Kourtney replied to Travis, writing: "Anything and everything with you," while Kim Kardashian penned: "THE CUTEST EVER."

A source close to Travis told E! News: "This has been something that Travis has been working on for some time.

"It's something he's wanted to do and to overcome. Kourtney has been incredibly loving and supportive and it is through her love, help and confidence in him that he was able to finally do this. The people that have been close to Travis since his crash are so very excited for him."

The couple have since flown again, enjoying tips to Italy and Paris over the summer.
