lA mother has shed almost half her body weight – after being embarrassed by a holiday photo where she looked bigger than a caravan park’s mascot GORILLA

Nicolee McKeown, 33, from Heysham, Lancashire, was left so red-faced by the picture with ‘Greedy the Gorilla’ that she dropped a staggering 11 stone in less than a year.

She took her family to Haven Primrose Valley Holiday Park in Filey, North Yorkshire, in May 2018, and was a size 32 at the time, tipping the scales at 24 stone and nine pounds.

Her children Teddie, seven, and Maisie, five, desperately wanted a picture with the holiday park mascot and Nicolee reluctantly agreed.

But when she saw the snaps, the mortified hospital ward clerk was inspired to ditch the five takeaways a week she used to gorge on and start eating healthily.

And last month, she returned to the seaside town and could not wait to strike up a pose next to the mascots to show off her new slimline figure.

Nicolee said: ‘I was so embarrassed that I was bigger than Greedy the gorilla. I didn’t want my picture taken by anyone, but my kids insisted.

‘I felt so self-conscious and felt like I had hit rock bottom, but the only way from there was up.’

‘I want people to know that they should never doubt themselves, they can do it. It’s small little changes that make big impacts.’

Now a trim 13st 2lbs, Nicolee fits snuggly into a size 14 dress.

Nicolee said that after the tragic death of a family member who suffered a stroke aged just 39, she decided it was time to make a change as her weight put her at risk.

She had always been overweight, but saw how difficult it was for the family and didn’t want to put her young kids through the same trauma.

She joined Slimming World in April 2019, four months after the tragedy struck, with the goal to lose enough weight to fit into size 18 clothes.

But remarkably, she lost a whopping 10 stone in just 49 weeks without exercising after replacing a diet of five takeaways a week with healthier food.

She swapped Chinese takeaways for homemade meals and immediately saw a change on the scales but also her confidence.

The mother-of-two said: ‘I knew I was at risk of a stroke because I was so overweight.

‘I didn’t want to see the destruction of my family, I didn’t want to leave my children without a mum.

‘My diet was awful, I was stressed and I ate five takeaways a week. I had an unhealthy relationship with food, I was depressed, but now I feel a million times better.’

She said that her newfound nimbleness has allowed her to spend more time with her children which she says is the ‘most important thing’.

Nicolee has been able to enjoy days out at trampoline parks which she previously couldn’t join due to weight restrictions.

She said: ‘Spending time with my children is so important to me, it’s nice to be able to do so much more with them.

‘Simple things like being able to go to the trampoline parks, and I couldn’t do that because there was a maximum weight limit.

‘I used to have to stand at the side, which was so devastating.

‘I once got stuck in a slide on soft play, it’s not nice to have other people looking at you. It was embarrassing and a terrible feeling.’

Nicolee is hoping her story encourages other people who may feel like they’ve hit rock bottom to make a change in their lives.

She said: ‘I would never let anyone take a picture of me before. But now I feel great. All it took were a few changes to make a massive difference.’
