My abusive husband won't respect lockdown rules despite my health condition and I want to leave him

DEAR DEIDRE:  MY husband swore at me, threatened to punch me and kicked my dinner across the floor because I asked him not to go round to our daughter’s house to do some decorating during lockdown.

My family don’t take the lockdown rules seriously and have no respect for my health. I’ve had cancer, so I should be shielding. But my family think it’s OK to pop round whenever they like.

My grandson turns up here with mates. When I try to tell off my family, they just roll their eyes at me.

My husband has been physically abusive before and often mentally abusive.

But this new barrage of yelling and kicking my food left me quaking.

I walk on eggshells every day now. I feel like leaving him when lockdown is over. We are both 62.

DEIDRE SAYS: Perhaps the stress of recent months has got to your husband but that doesn’t excuse any form of violence.

You can end your relationship now – lockdown rules don’t compel anyone to stay with someone abusive.
