Prosecco hangovers are officially the worst, according to an expert
Prosecco is the Christmas tipple of choice for many.
With a name as the accessible fancy drink, its presence will be felt in houses around the country over the coming weeks.
However, lovers of the bubbly drink should beware and take stock. Because according to a top wine expert, Prosecco hangovers are officially the worst.
Club Vino’s sommelier and co-founder Marco Castelanelli confirmed the news to Tyla, saying: ‘If you find that you get the worst headache ever after a glass or two of Prosecco, then quite simply, blame it on the bubbles.
‘Prosecco and champagne both contain little pockets of carbon dioxide which change how the alcohol flows through the bloodstream, helping the body absorb the alcohol faster.’
But how does one drink manage to do so much damage? Marco explains it’s the Co2.
‘Once in the bloodstream, the Co2 competes with oxygen, which is why you might feel a little woozy and rather drunk rather quickly, leading to an exaggerated hangover in the form of a pounding head,’ he said.
If you are reading this and thinking you will have to forego the fizz for Christmas, fear not. Marco says there are ways to prevent a full-blown head melt.
He advises not to consume Prosecco on an empty stomach, drink it slowly, and counteract every glass of Prosecco with a glass of water.
However, if all else fails and you forget to follow any of these rules, Marco says to ‘drink a large glass of water before bed.’ A line we have heard many times before and which has never worked.
Yet, with prime Prosecco drinking time only days away, we might take his word for it.
