Riley Keough underwent training to become a death doula — eight months after her brother Benjamin Keough’s suicide.

The actress completed the Art of Death Midwifery course by the Sacred Crossings Institute in Los Angeles, she revealed on Instagram.

“We are taught that its a morbid subject to talk about. Or were so afraid of it that we’re unable to talk about it… then of course it happens to us, and we are very ill prepared,” she wrote. “I think it’s so important to be educated on conscious dying and death the way we educate ourselves on birth and conscious birthing. We prepare ourselves so rigorously for the entrance and have no preparation for our exit.”

A death doula, or a death midwife, is a person who provides help by “bringing deeper meaning and greater comfort to dying people and loved ones in the last days of life,” according to The International End of Life Doula Association.

Benjamin died in July of 2020  at his home in Calabasas, Calif., from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 27 years old.

Riley and Benjamin are both the children of Lisa Marie Presley and ex-husband Danny Keough.

One week after Benjamin’s death, Riley shared an emotional message on social media, writing, “Mornings are the hardest. I forget you’re gone. I can’t cry because of the fear that I will never stop. A pain that’s new to me.”

Riley also got a tattoo on her collarbone to pay tribute to her late brother.

Lisa Marie remembered her son three months after his death, sharing at the time, “The depth of the pain is suffocating and bottomless without you every moment of every day. I will never be the same. Please wait for me my love, and hold my hand while I stay to continue to protect and raise your little sisters and to be here for Riley. I know you would want that.”
