Hollywood actress Christina Applegate has revealed the sad news that she has been diagnosed with the incurable neurodegenerative disease multiple sclerosis.

The 49-year-old Anchorman star took to Twitter on Tuesday to tell her fans that despite the “tough” diagnosis she was staying strong and was fighting to remain positive.

Multiple sclerosis is an incurable condition which is caused when the body’s immune system begins attacking the central nervous system, affecting cognitive function.

Christina explained that she had been diagnosed several months ago and was being cared for and supported by others with the same condition as she battled the condition.

She penned: “Hi friends. A few months ago I was diagnosed with MS.

“It’s been a strange journey. But I have been so supported by people that I know who also have this condition.

“It’s been a tough road. But as we all know, the road keeps going. Unless some a**hole blocks it," she bravely joked.

In a second tweet, Christina added that she would not be letting the disease get her down and would stay resilient as she asked for privacy through the difficult time.

Another commented: “Damn! Well let’s face it. You are a true inspiration. Just keep doing what you’re doing. Keep swinging. Keep ducking. You’re a fighter. We’re always rooting for you.”

Many fellow MS sufferers also reacted to Christina’s posts, sharing words of encouragement.

One said: “Sending good wishes. MS isn't funny but that's not the end of your journey. I was diagnosed 16 years ago and I'm living normal with a lot of happiness.”

Another tweeted: “I’m saddened to welcome anyone to this sucky club. It’s no fun and no fair and unpredictable as all hell. I will say that the available treatments and meds to slow the progression are worlds better than even 15 years ago, which is a significant bright spot. All the best.”

Christina shot to fame after starring in Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead and recently starred in Netflix smash dark comedy Dead To Me.

The actress also appeared as Veronica Corningstone in the 2004 flick Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, as well as the 2013 sequel.

She previously battled breast cancer back in 2008, undergoing a double mastectomy and credited early diagnosis with saving her life.
