Elvis Presley spent the last few years of his life working in a residency slot in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. While the 42-year-old was still performing some of his best work yet, he did not have the classic rock and roll image that he was famous and well-known for. Before his death on August 16, 1977, Elvis developed a drug habit, which was later deemed a key factor in his death. But earlier that year, he was visited by Sir Cliff Richard.
Both Elvis and Sir Cliff worked around the globe as musical artists at the same time.
The pair played similarly styled rock and roll music, and were unbelievably famous.
Despite their similarities and constant touring, they never met.
On today’s episode of James Martin’s Saturday Kitchen, Sir Cliff spoke out about how he almost met Elvis, and about how he snubbed the King in Vegas during his residency.
First, the star told James about how he tracked down Elvis’ house in Bremerhaven, Germany, where he was stationed during his time in the army.
Sir Cliff explained: “The first time we were coming back from Italy, and and Bad Nauheim, was not far away – that’s where Elvis was stationed while he was in the army.
“We found the house – you couldn’t miss it, it had ‘Elvis I love you’ all over it – I knocked on the door and this big guy said: ‘Yeah can I help you?’
“I said, is Elvis in? And he said ‘no, he’s not. Who are you?’ I said ‘well I’m Cliff Richard,’ and he said ‘well okay, I’ll let him know you called,’ and I rushed out!”
After this, he regaled James with a Vegas story, and how he didn’t get a photo with the King, despite wanting one.
He said: “The second time I was in Vegas … but he was very overweight.
“When I got offered the chance to get photographed with him, from a newspaper journalist, I said look I’d love it but can’t we wait until he makes a movie?
“When he makes a movie Elvis suddenly looks like the old Elvis! He’d lose the weight, he’d look great.”

Sir Cliff sadly added: “Just later that year Elvis died. I could kick myself.”
Elvis died in the bathroom of his home at Graceland, Memphis, Tennessee.
With him was his fiancée at the time, Ginger Alden, and his daughter, Lisa Marie Presley.
The King’s death was later announced to be a cardiac arrest.
Earlier in the interview with Sir Cliff, James was told about how he first met The Shadows, Bruce Welch and Hank Marvin.
He said: “My guy who said ‘I will make you a star’ went back and said ‘I’ve just seen this guy who plays like [famed American guitarist] James Burton’.
“So, they came to my house, and we got guitars out, and it was instant! Hearing Bruce and Hank and what they did, adding to my drummer and me – we still didn’t have a bass player then – but it just sounded fantastic!”
James Martin’s Saturday Kitchen airs Saturdays at 9.30am on ITV.
