Nominees for the VMAs New 'K-Pop' Category Include BTS, BlackPink, and EXO
For the first time in history, MTV’s Video Music Awards includes a K-pop category among their awards. With this, artists like BlackPink and BTS earned nominations and praise from fans worldwide, specifically for their colorful music videos. Here is a list the artists nominated in the “Best K-pop” category at the 2019 VMAs.
MTV nominated BTS for their music video, “Boy With Luv”
As one of the biggest boy bands in the world and one of the best-known K-pop groups on this list, BTS earned a nomination for their “Boy With Luv” music video, featuring Halsey. Aside from Best K-pop, the boy band is nominated for Best Collaboration, Best Art Direction, and Best Choreography.
A few fans weren’t exactly happy with BTS’ four nominations, mainly because the group’s “Boy With Luv” music video broke YouTube records. Some fans took to Twitter, claiming the awards show is biased for not including “Boy With Luv” among the nominees for Video of the Year.
“Uh, I wish we could ask the guys what they want in regards to this VMA situation,” said one Twitter user. “Like if they want that Best K-pop award I’m all for making it happen but if [they’re trying to] stick it to the man, I’m down for boycotting, too.”
MTV nominated BlackPink for ‘Kill This Love’
This year has been a good year for BlackPink, as they enjoyed international success. The all-girl group performed at Coachella. They had an interview on The Late Late Show with James Corden and currently earn hundreds of millions of views on their music videos.
Additionally, BlackPink is earning recognition from the MTV VMAs, for their music video “Kill This Love.” Their music video has almost 500 million views on YouTube, fans commending the girls on their larger than life visuals.
