Mark Zuckerberg: 'I Understand' Why Conservatives Think We're Biased

Facebook chief tells Fox News he wants to “be a platform for all ideas”

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg, during a wide ranging interview with Fox News host Dana Perino on Friday, doubled down on his recent argument the company is better served by taking a hands-off approach to political ads. Zuckerberg also weighed in on the perception major tech companies carry a strong liberal bias.

“Do you believe that there is a bias against conservatives in Silicon Valley?” Perino asked midway through the interview.

Zuckerberg said the answer “depends.” Conservative media, he pointed out, typically performs well on Facebook and other social platforms. On the other hand, he said “California is an overwhelmingly left-leaning place,” where about 90% of political donations in Silicon Valley go towards Democratic candidates.

“I understand why people would ask the question of ‘are my ideas getting a fair shake?’” Zuckerberg said. “And all that I can say on this is, this is something I care about. I want to make sure we can be a platform for all ideas. I think that giving everyone a voice is important and that’s how we make progress.”

In recent years, Facebook has been criticized by both pundits on the left and the right over who and what it allows on its platform. In May, Facebook banned several prominent right-wing commentators, including Alex Jones and Milo Yiannopoulos, as well as Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. The company pointed to a vague policy against “dangerous individuals and organizations” as the reason for its purge. Weeks later, The White House rolled out a tool for reporting “political bias” on social media.

“Social media platforms should advance Free speech. Yet too many Americans have seen their accounts suspended, banned, or fraudulently reported for unclear “violations” of user policies,” read the tool’s welcome message.

Earlier this month, Zuckerberg was criticized by some on the left after Politico reported he’d had several off-the-record meetings with conservative commentators this year. In response, Zuckerberg said these dinners were “part of learning” from people with “a wide range of viewpoints.”

On Thursday — one day after giving a speech on the topic at Georgetown University — Zuckerberg reiterated his belief Facebook should take a laissez-faire stance on policing its platform, including whether politicians lie in political ads.

Overall, Facebook has a “responsibility” to protect its users from harm, Zuckerberg said, and he boasted the company’s security budget now exceeds the $5.1 billion it made in 2012, its first year as a public company. He added this can be accomplished “in a way that still protects freedom of expression.”

He continued: “I think it’s our responsibility to address the issues, but also push back on broadening the definition of what people consider dangerous online, beyond what is absolutely necessary.”

Howard Ashman and Wolfgang Puck Documentaries Coming to Disney+ from Don Hahn & 'Jiro Dreams of Sushi' Filmmaker

Today, I attended a Disney+ presentation in Hollywood, where we learned that the upcoming streaming service will be the home of two interesting documentaries.

Don Hahn, the producer of Disney animation movies like The Lion King and The Hunchback of Notre Dame and a talented director in his own right, directed a film about the life of Howard Ashman, the acclaimed lyricist behind films like Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, and that movie will be available next year on Disney+. And filmmaker David Gelb, who directed the 2011 documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi, is returning to profile another famous chef in a new doc about Wolfgang Puck.

Disney+ has acquired the worldwide distribution rights for Howard, which played at some film festivals last year but doesn’t seem to have ever gotten a proper release beyond that. Don Hahn views this documentary as something of a follow-up to his 2009 documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty, which charted the rise of Walt Disney Animation into its golden age in the late ’80s and ’90s. Howard will tell the story of the whip sharp mind behind the songs of Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and musicals like Little Shop of Horrors. Howard Ashman tragically died at age 40 due to complications from AIDS. The film will stream exclusively on Disney+ in 2020.

On a more upbeat note, though, did you know that Jerry Orbach, the guy who played Jennifer Grey’s dad in Dirty Dancing and who appeared in 250+ episodes of Law & Order, was the voice of Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast? Because this is somehow the first I’m hearing about this, and my mind is kind of blown over here.

Meanwhile, David Gelb, the guy who directed Jiro Dreams of Sushi and created the Netflix series Chef’s Table, is heading back into the world of food once again to direct a Wolfgang Puck documentary called Wolfgang. The doc is described as “an intimate portrait of the life and work of the original ‘celebrity chef,’ Wolfgang Puck.” There’s no word yet about when this project will hit the new streaming service, but this is the first new work from Gelb since his 2015 documentary A Faster Horse, which was about the Ford Mustang. (Trivia: Gelb also directed the 2015 horror movie The Lazarus Effect, which had a terrific cast and…not much else.) But assuming he puts the same amount of care and style into this new movie as his previous food docs, this one should be another treat for audiences.

Prince Harry grieves for Princess Diana ‘every single time I see a camera’

It’s been an emotional month for Prince Harry — and now, the 35-year-old royal is opening up about reliving the painful memory of his mother Princess Diana’s 1997 death, calling his grief a “wound that festers.”

“I think being part of this family, in this role and this job, every single time I see a camera, every single time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash, it takes me straight back,” he tells ITV News in an interview set to air Sunday. “So in that respect, it’s the worst reminder of her life as opposed to the best.”

The Duke of Sussex also discussed his mom’s legacy after her fatal car accident while being chased by paparazzi in Paris. She was 36 years old at the time, and he was just 12.

“Everything I do reminds me of her,” he says. “But as I said ― with the role ― with the job and the sort of the pressures that come with that, I get reminded of the bad stuff, unfortunately.”

The revealing interview is part of an ITV documentary, “Harry & Meghan: An African Journey,” which follows the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s recent trip in which Harry retraced Diana’s steps over two decades later during a walk through an Angola minefield.

“Being here now, 22 years later, trying to finish what she started, will be incredibly emotional,” he says.

In the same interview, Prince Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, also expressed melancholy about the spotlight affecting her pregnancy and shaping her life as a new mom.

“I would say, look, any woman, especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable and so that was made really challenging,” says the Duchess of Sussex, 38. “And then when you have a newborn, you know? And especially as a woman, it’s really, it’s a lot. So you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed it’s um … yeah.”

Markle, who gave birth to baby Archie in May, also thanked the interviewer, Tom Bradby, for asking how she is doing.

“Thank you for asking, because not many people have asked if I’m OK, but it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes,” she says.

During an appearance at the WellChild Awards in London, Prince Harry also got choked up speaking about this time last year, when he had to keep Markle’s pregnancy a secret.

“Last year, when my wife and I attended, we knew we were expecting our first child, and no one else did at the time, but we did, and I remember,” he said with a pause. “I remember squeezing Meghan’s hand so tight during the awards, both of us thinking what it would be like to be parents one day.”

Prince Harry has been candid about his struggles with the media recently, lashing out at the British tabloid press for their “ruthless campaign” against his wife, comparing it to the way his mother was treated.

“I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces,” he wrote in a statement.

Watch Carly Rae Jepsen’s Acoustic, Waterfront ‘The Sound’ Performance

Carly Rae Jepsen visited Finland with her band and filmed a special stripped-down take of her bubbly song “The Sound.” The track appeared on her recently released album Dedicated.

The clip starts out with Jepsen looking out on the water from the edge of the dock before joining the musicians. They remain alone on the dock, letting the song slowly build up as the performance progresses.

Jepsen is still touring in support of Dedicated, which is her fourth album and followed up her 2015 LP Emotion. She began rolling out the album last November with the single “Party of One.”

In her interview with Rolling Stone about Dedicated, the singer-songwriter revealed that she had written more than 200 songs for the LP and had originally planned on releasing a disco album. For this LP, she wrote and recorded between Sweden, Nicaragua and Los Angeles, where she is currently based.

After unexpectedly falling pregnant I had a termination — and now I am struggling to cope – The Sun

DEAR DEIDRE: AFTER I unexpectedly fell pregnant I had a termination. Now I am struggling to cope.

I am 39 and have two amazing children, a daughter of 18 and a son of 16. My husband was my childhood sweetheart and we have been married for 21 years. He is 40.

I’ve suffered from anxiety for years but medication has kept it under control for the past two.

We had just got back on our feet after years of struggling financially and were able to have some quality of life. Then, three months ago, I found out I was pregnant.

A side-effect of my medication is the risk of severe physical and mental problems for the child. I couldn’t live with myself knowing my medication had done that to my baby.

My husband and I talked and decided on a termination. That was six weeks ago.

I am devastated and though we felt we had no other option, medically, emotionally or physically, I  can’t move on.

I don’t know if it is hormones or guilt but my mind and body crave another child and I am struggling to forgive myself.

It is never an easy decision to have a termination, even when it is the best course, as in your sad situation.

DEIDRE SAYS: It is natural you have feelings of guilt and regret but having another baby now would not wipe out these feelings and would most likely land you with a whole other set of stresses and worries.

Your husband is no doubt grieving as well, so talk to him and support each other.

My e-leaflet Termination You Regret? will help you.

You already suffer from anxiety, increasing your feeling of grief. Contact Anxiety UK for understanding support (anxietyuk.org.uk, 03444 775 774).

Megan Barton-Hanson splits with girlfriend Chelcee Grimes after six weeks of dating

LOVE Island star Megan Barton-Hanson has split with girlfriend Chelcee Grimes after six weeks of dating.
It comes after the pair found it increasingly hard to find time to see each other amid their busy schedules.

Former stripper Megan, 25, was last pictured with the songwriter Chelcee, 27, who has penned tracks for superstar Kylie Minogue, arriving back in London after a trip to LA together.
They had also been snapped at the Women's Super League trophy in Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium last month, shortly after Megan's fling with Towie star Demi Sims, 23, after meeting on E4 show Celebs Go Dating.
A music industry insider said: "They got on really well and enjoyed a brief romance, but decided to call it a day earlier this week.

"Both were a bit upset about it, but remain pals.

"Chelcee is throwing herself into her music projects and concentrating on recording new tracks at the moment.

"She is working on a music video so that is taking her mind off her love life."
Meanwhile, Megan, who has recently ditched her signature blonde locks to go brunette, is working with High Street lingerie brand Ann Summers.
Speaking about her sexuality earlier this year Megan, who dated Wes Nelson, 21, on Love Island, said: “I think long-term I would get with a woman, but it's hard.

"I just felt like I needed to get with a guy because society said so but after the s*** I've been through, I just want to see how it goes with a woman."

The split comes just weeks after Megan gushed about Chelcee, telling Metro Online: "It is definitely different [dating girls to guys].

"My whole life I’ve never really had a relationship with girls, like I said on Celebs Go Dating.

"And I’ve had, sexual experiences with girls and I’ve had one night stands with girls, but I feel like this is actually me.

"I’ve never felt so comfortable in my life, I feel like I’m finally where I should be. I’ve never felt as comfortable with someone."

HBO Max documentary to explore Amy Schumer's difficult pregnancy

As Amy Schumer‘s fans know, she is nothing if not candid. The comedian spoke frankly about her experience carrying her first child both on social media and in her recent Neflix comedy special Growing, an experience that can be charitably described as “difficult.” Complications from a form of acute morning sickness, known as hyperemesis gravidarum, forced her to cancel her comedy tour, and the comedian battled severe nausea and illness throughout her pregnancy.

Now Schumer is extending that candidness to a new, “unfiltered” documentary, exploring her tumultuous experience with pregnancy. The doc, working title Expecting Amy, will be released on HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s forthcoming streaming service.

Expecting Amy will follow Schumer from the day she found out she was pregnant to the birth of her child, chronicling her work on her tour and Growing along the way, as well as her hospitalizations and moments at home with her family. The project aims to depict a raw, honest portrait of Schumer’s experiences and perseverance during this difficult period in her life.

”Women are warriors, every one of us. And I hope sharing my story brings more awareness to the challenges of pregnancy and childbirth,” Schumer said in a statement.

HBO Max is set to launch in spring 2020, loaded with such beloved properties as FriendsThe West Wing, and Studio Ghibli’s films, along with a bevy of new original content.

Want to become a social media influencer? There's now a uni degree for it

If any of your older relatives have told you to get off Instagram and get back to school, we have good news.

An Italian university is now offering a degree in becoming a social media influencer.

Online institution eCampus has created a three-year programme geared to equip students with the technical skills needed to gain traction on social media.

It might sound a little far-fetched, but considering there’s a range of degrees for seemingly niche disciplines like puppetry, handbags and yachting, it’s not a huge stretch for people to want to study an area that is relevant and lucrative.

According to a recent study by Rakuten Marketing, UK marketers allocate 40% of their budget to influencer campaigns and 49% of global consumers engage with influencer marketing to discover new brands and products, so there’s plenty of opportunities to be had.

Unsurprisingly, some of the degree modules sound pretty fun – there’s language philosophy, TV history, intercultural communication, and fashion psychology.

The online institution might not be one of the most well-known for higher learning, but perhaps it will be the first of many to offer education in this field.

Even so, it’s a risky move to launch a programme meant to prepare young people for a career path that isn’t exactly concrete, particularly when Italy’s youth unemployment rate is one of the highest in Europe at 27.1%.

In related news, eCampus recently forged connections with one of the biggest influencers in the business.

The university appointed football star Cristiano Ronaldo as its new ambassador.

He doesn’t seem to be able to turn down an endorsement deal, having promoted products such as custom-made Cristiano blankets, Egyptian steel, and a muscle stimulation product that apparently will give you six-pack abs.

In his new gig, Cristiano has teamed up with the university to fund 36 student grants.

Fancy becoming an influencer? This is – potentially – your chance.

Stormi Isn’t As Into Kylie’s "Rise & Shine" Remix As The Rest Of The Internet

If you’ve spent even a few minutes on Twitter this week, there’s a 99.9% chance you encountered Kylie Jenner’s "rise and shine" meme in one form or another. Even though Ariana Grande thinks it’s a bop, one person incredibly close to the makeup mogul-slash-"singer" may be her biggest critic yet. Stormi listened to Jenner’s "rise and shine" remix, and let’s just say she’s not as into it as the rest of the internet.

Ever since Jenner sang "rise and shine" to baby Stormi in her Kylie Cosmetics office tour video, published on Oct. 10, the clip unexpectedly took on a life of its own. And Jenner has gotten very into it — sharing several memes on her own social media accounts and even adding the phrase to her Instagram bio. In case that’s not enough, she started selling "rise and shine" merch in the form of $65 hoodies.

Then on Thursday, things took a turn: Jenner filmed Stormi listening to one of the many meme remixes, and despite dancing around at first, the 1-year-old soon tired of the track and asked her mom to put on one of her dad Travis Scott’s songs instead. (To be fair, Stormi has long-been Scott’s number one fan, regularly wearing Astroworld merch and watching his performances.)

Even though Stormi isn’t the biggest fan of her mom’s meme, Jenner’s other family members are all about the now-iconic phrase. Kendall Jenner tweeted she wants to make "rise and shine" her ringtone, and Kim Kardashian shared an edit version of the clip, where she makes a cameo in Stormi’s crib.

Miley Cyrus and new boyfriend Cody Simpson are also big fans of the meme. Simpson, who has a history with the KUWTK star, recreated Jenner’s video… with his dog. As for Cyrus, she reposted yet another meme, where Jenner performs during an appearance on The Voice with the "Slide Away" singer as a judge.

Cyrus wasn’t the only pop star who loved Jenner’s "rise and shine." Grande lip-synced to the short song on Instagram Story and asked if she could sample it on her own future track. Soon after, Jenner responded with her approval — as long as she can be in the inevitable music video. Maybe by the time Grande records that song, it’ll grow on Stormi and she can make a cameo too.
