Coronation Street legend Julie Goodyear 'almost sacked over sex toy'
Coronation Street stalwart Julie Goodyear has recalled a time she was nearly sacked over a prank involving a sex toy.
The actress, who portrayed Bet Lynch across various stints in the soap, was due to film scenes with co-star Roy Barraclough, who portrayed on-screen husband Alec Gilroy.
Roy produced a vibrator during the scene in question, which Julie claims the producers were not happy about. Julie, however, decided to have a bit of fun herself, as she pressed a ‘play’ button on her pyjamas.
The classic track The Only Way Is Up started to play aloud, and crew members were left laughing.
‘We hadn’t been in the bed very long,’ said Julie, recalling the incident, ‘Only five seconds.
‘All I could hear was buzzing.
‘And it was vibrator he’d got under the covers. So I thought right, OK.
‘The crew, everybody, were all in hysterics. So I pressed my pyjama top – it played The Only Way Is Up.
‘It made the crew worse.’
Producers were seemingly less than pleased with Julie and Roy’s prank, with Julie revealing that their jobs were on the line as a result.
‘We were threatened with the sack,’ she added on YouTube show, Your Manchester. ‘I wish we could see it again.’
The scene in question never made it to air.
Julie made her first appearance as Bet in 1966, before returning on a more permanent basis in 1970.
The actress departed 25 years later in 1995, but made sporadic comebacks in 2002 and 2003.
