Dancing On Ice: Jason Donovan’s wife disapproved of Strictly Come Dancing stint

Dancing on Ice: Jason Donovan discusses show with Lorraine

Actor and singer Jason Donovan, 52, is among the six contestants who will kick off the competition on Sunday as the 13th season of Dancing on Ice premieres. However not everyone in his family is entirely supportive of him taking part in the competition, as he recalled his wife wasn’t happy when he signed up to Strictly Come Dancing either.

Jason is going to be partnered with professional figure skater Alexandra Schauman for the reality competition.

Ahead of his first time on the ice, the star had opened up about his family’s mixed feelings about him taking part.

“I think they’re worried about injury more than anything,” he said.

“My wife didn’t think that doing Strictly was a great idea until I started winning and then it was a fantastic idea.”

Jason took part in the ninth series of Strictly, and finished the competition coming in third.

He is feeling “cautiously optimistic” about the competition but admitted he “would be lying if I didn’t say I’d like to get through to the end”.

“Being the winner doesn’t always make you the most memorable,” Jason remarked.

“You’d be foolish to say you were getting into a show like this if you didn’t want to do your best so wherever that ends up, that’s fine.”

Jason revealed it will be his daughter who has got behind him and will give him the support he needs to make it to the end of the competition.

“My nine-year-old daughter is pretty pumped at the idea of seeing me dance on skates so that’s a big thing!”

Although Jason’s biggest fear as it comes to competing on the ice is fear itself, he said the scariest thing he ever did was become a dad.

“That’s pretty scary and it’s ongoing. I’ve got three. One’s 20 and it doesn’t get any easier,” he commented.

One of the biggest aspects that drew him to take part in Dancing on Ice is “it’s a skill, it’s structure in a time when there’s not much structure in our lives”.

Jason continued: “It’s good to keep fit, I really like that aspect of it.”

He believes his biggest strength is his hardworking nature which he developed throughout 30 years of performing.

But unlike being on the West End, the Dancing on Ice costumes are “more toned down” as Jason explained: “I am more than comfortable with fantastic costumes.”

Dancing on Ice begins Sunday at 6pm on ITV.
