Friends' Lisa Kudrow claims she 'really hated' sitcom fame and celebrity lifestyle after show took off

FRIENDS' Lisa Kudrow claims she 'really hated' the sitcom's fame and celebrity lifestyle after it took off.

The 57-year-old actress played Phoebe Buffay on the hit show from 1994 until 2004 alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer.

The six actors became the hottest property on TV almost overnight, with endless photo shoots and interviews and fans desperate to know all about them.

Speaking about that time in her life, Lisa told Candis magazine: "Being a celebrity is completely different from being an actor.

"It's easy enough to be a celebrity, you just show up at parties and be in all the right places and get your photograph into magazines – that's really doable.

"It's much easier than fulfilling yourself as an actor, working on your acting and finding roles that are interesting, which is actually hard."

She continued: "When Friends first took off, I thought my job was to be a celebrity and I started thinking, 'Hmmm, should I go to this party or to that one? Should I leave now or for a few minutes more?'

"And I tried it and I hated it – really, hated it."

Friends is still as popular today as ever thanks to it being available on Netflix for a whole new generation.

The cast were planning to celebrate the show with a special reunion episode earlier this year, but it was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Back in August, co-creator Marta Kauffman admitted social distancing implications for a live studio audience had postponed the reunion for even longer.

She told Entertainment Tonight: “We all want it to happen. We just have to wait until it is safe.

“This is a show that is not scripted, but this is the way the show works – we are going to need a live audience.

“Even if we socially distance that live audience, it really is a huge part of what Friends is… We can not do it without them."

Friends is available on Netflix.
