Hollyoaks viewers emotional as Martine Deveraux decides to get cancer treatment

Hollyoaks fans were left in tears on Monday evening as Martine Deveraux (Kellé Bryan) made a huge decision about her cancer treatment.

The businesswomen told her family that she would be getting cancer treatment despite having some reservations at first.

Martine left her father Walter (Trevor A Toussaint), son Toby (Bobby Gordon) and Celeste (Andrea Ali) devastated when she announced that she would not be receiving chemotherapy in heartbreaking scenes last week.

However, the mother of three had a change of heart during the latest first-look episode on E4.

Toby branded her "selfish" at the start of the emotional episode as the Deveraux's tried to make her reconsider her decision.

Walter reminded her that blocking the cancer out doesn’t make it go away, but Martine had enough, and therefore made a swift exit.

She later attended a meeting with Patsy – the unpleasant woman who had previously interviewed her for Business Woman of the Year.

Martine struggled to concentrate on what Patsy said to her – the words of Walter going round and round in her head.

As Patsy became demeaning once more, Martine ultimately snapped.

She put Pasty in her place, reiterating to her that she’s capable of handling anything, and that she fully deserved the award.

Martine evidently had enough of Patsy’s abhorrent behaviour, and told her that any future correspondence regarding the award could be done via email.

The showdown made Martine reconsider her decision regarding her cancer treatment.

She later informed her family that she’s going to the hospital to find out what comes next.

Taking to Twitter, one fan penned: "@kellebryan you are amazing! Martine is a fighter through and through!!!"

Another added: "Martine's gonna have chemo you got this Martine."

A third person posted: "Martine breaks my heart everyday."

While a fourth social media user wrote: "The Martine cancer story is too close to home. My mum has breast cancer and just finished treatment. Breaks my heart."

Martine found a lump on her breast last month, and subsequently took a trip to the hospital to get said lump checked out.

The soap has shown the process of Martine discovering her condition as part of a storyline exploring unconscious bias that people of colour face in everyday situations – including awaiting medical results.

The Deveraux family were left speechless when Martine originally announced that she will not be accepting treatment.
