How does Maid end on Netflix?

Alex gets a scholarship

Throughout the series, Alex has gotten a lot of support from her local writers’ group.

This proved to be worthwhile as she is given a scholarship for writing at the University of Montana.

By working hard at her cleaning job, Alex also manages to get enough money together to make this possible.

Alex is excited to be given a chance to start again but is still struggling for money as she continues to get by on government assistance.

Sean gives Alex full custody

Sean (Nick Robinson) eventually did the right thing and dropped the custody lawsuit, allowing Alex to have Maddy full-time.

He saw the damage he was doing to his little girl because of his drinking, recognising he was acting like his alcoholic mother when he was a child.

Alex says he can visit Maddy whenever he wants to but he can only do so when he is sober.

Sean vows he will get himself clean so it looks like he is on the road to recovery.

Paula lets Alex down again

Paula (Andie MacDowell) has always had a difficult relationship with her daughter as Alex grew up with her mum’s abusive alcoholic boyfriend.

When Alex said she was going to move to Missoula, Paula said she was going to join her.

This didn’t happen in the end as Micah, Paula’s love interest who has a drinking problem, asks her to move in with him and she agrees.

As they say their goodbyes, Paula asks her daughter to say she loved her which she does but doesn’t say it back.

Alex and Maddy start a new life

The series ends with Alex and Maddy living their lives in Missoula.

The mother and daughter duo go on a hike together with Alex’s voiceover describing it as a difficult journey but it was worth it as they reached the top.

When they are on the mountain, they see a giant “M” which Alex tells the youngster stands for Maddy.

Of course, this wasn’t true but Alex wanted her daughter to enjoy living in make-believe sometimes.

Maid is based on the Stephanie Lang memoir “Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive”.

Some fans have called for a second season but Maid closely follows the plot of the book which ends with Alex and Maddy moving.

As the show has also been listed as a limited series, it is unlikely there will be any more new episodes.

Maid is available to watch on Netflix.
