‘Lucifer’ Season 6 Trailer Brings Back Dan Espinoza, but How Does He Fit Into the Storyline?
Fans were left heartbroken by the exit of one main character near the end of Season 5B of Netflix’s Lucifer. Dan Espinoza, played by Kevin Alejandro, was introduced as Chloe Decker’s (Lauren German) ex-husband. The character had some downfalls in his storyline that had fans distrust him, but fans came to appreciate Dan in the grand scheme of things along the way. By the end of Season 5B, Dan meets his fateful end when killed by a hitman. The newest trailer for Lucifer Season 6 reveals that Dan lives on, but fans are unsure of how he fits into the storyline due to his death in the prior season.
Dan dies in Chloe’s arms
In episode 15 of Season 5B, Dan works an investigation with Amenadiel (D.B. Woodside) and finds himself against a French hitman who was working for Michael (Tom Ellis). In an emotional scene, Dan is killed by gunshot and is soon found by Chloe. Knowing he is likely to die, Dan tells Chloe to tell their daughter that he will miss making unicorn armies. Dan’s final words are saying goodbye to Chloe.
In the aftermath, fans watch as the main characters sit in the hospital waiting room and learn of his death as Trixie (Scarlett Estevez) arrives and breaks down crying. Soon after, the characters and the police force hold his funeral with Lucifer and Ella (Aimee Garcia) singing in his memory.
Dan returns in the Season 6 trailer
Netflix revealed that Season 5B would not be the end of Lucifer as the show was renewed for one final season. The Season 6 trailer, which premiered on August 10, shocked fans with the return of Dan. As Lucifer is hesitant to take up the throne in heaven and his rebellious younger sister is hellbent on his demise, Dan returns in some capacity that fans are not 100% sure how.
In the trailer, Dan is seen playing ping pong in the precinct with a fellow officer and communicating with the other characters. One scene depicts Dan standing next to Ella and screaming when Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) pulls out a severed head from a bag. Dan’s overall role in the new season has not been specified.
‘Lucifer’ bosses and Kevin Alejandro tease Dan’s involvement
When news of the show’s sixth season was released, many fans wondered how Dan could return. At a Comic [email protected] panel, the executive producers Joe Henderson and Ildy Modrovich teased fans on how Dan would fit into Season 6. According to Digital Spy, Henderson explains that Dan was trying to leave a legacy in Season 5 and, “That is something we will explore in season 6, the legacy of that gesture from Dan.”
Actor Kevin Alejandro told Entertainment Weekly more about his initial reaction to learning about Season 6 and its meaning for his character. Alejandro said, “What? We just killed me. What the heck? But you know, Joe and Ildy immediately approached me with, ‘Hey, it’s not the end, and it doesn’t have to be for you either, because we know how to do this in a respectful way that is not going to lower the quality of storytelling that we’ve already established in the beginning.” Fans can look forward to Dan’s return in some capacity but in a way that might not have been expected.
