Maid fans were introduced to a strange tale during the fifth episode of the Netflix series. During the episode, Alex (played by Margaret Qualley) visits a house in the woods to discover the truth of Barefoot Billy, a young man that ran away from home years earlier. The story has a powerful impact on Alex, but fans believe there is still more to be discovered.

Who was Barefoot Billy?

Born William Harlan Ritchie, the young man would later become known as Barefoot Billy, something of an urban legend for the locals.

The son of Louise Alva Ritchie, the pair lived in an isolated community on the outskirts of town.

According to the local media, Billy went on to be a notorious burglar, breaking into over 50 homes in the local area.

During his criminal acts, he would leave muddy footprints, giving him the moniker he is known by today.

Over the years following his crimes, rumours naturally escalated, to the point of Yolanda (Tracy Vilar) telling Alex that he was a dangerous criminal when she moves into town.

Alex rejects the idea, insisting that he was nothing more than a misunderstood and misguided petty criminal.

She decided to discover the truth for herself, taking her to a cabin outside of town that is believed to be the final resting place of Billy.

Once she is there, Billy is nowhere to be seen, neither a body nor a living soul.

Was Barefoot Billy hiding in the woods?

While cleaning the former home of Louise’s, Alex finds some unusual belongings of the previous owner.

Joined by Kelly (Jill Morrison), they find a Nazi doll along with several locks throughout the residence, which looks designed to keep someone inside.

Alex believes this traumatic home life led Billy to become the criminal he is known as today, though he has been missing for years.

On Reddit, fans have been discussing the strange subplot, with some of them believing Billy is still alive and out in the woods.

User Nevergoingtojim wrote: “Was that guy in the woods or house? Was the guy that got locked up in the crawl space creeping around the house still? That episode gave me chills.”

Lindseyhasears replied: “It seems he was in the area – the window being open, her seeing someone in the woods.

“Definitely was playing like a horror movie for a bit before it took a turn to her identifying with him.”

While it is possible Billy could still be alive and surviving in the woods, another user came up with a logical explanation for the bone-chilling moment.

PrincessPudding explained: “A plausible explanation for Alex seeing someone is she may have been hallucinating.

“Inbetween living in a mold-infested apartment and cleaning in an enclosed room using bleach and window cleaner (ammonia), I wouldn’t be surprised if she started seeing things!” (sic)

The entire sequence remained largely unexplained, with the fate of Billy left open to the viewer’s own interpretation.

Maid is credited as a self-contained miniseries, so it is likely fans will never get a concrete answer for Billy’s fate.

Maid is available to watch exclusively on Netlflix.
