Martin Scorsese Considered Directing "Joker" Film [Rumor]
Expectations are extremely high for Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, which is slated to be released in the United States on Nov. 1.
Scorsese will be doing yet another project with Robert De Niro that also stars Al Pacino. He also succeeded in bringing Joe Pesci out of retirement (along with some help of DeNiro).
While fans await the release of The Irishman, Joker has been the talk of town in the movie industry. The movie – directed by Todd Phillips – stars Joaquin Phoenix, and it’s been met with positive reviews up to this point.
Though Scorsese is best known for directing action films that centered around crime and intense violence – and certainly not comic films – he reportedly thought about working on Joker.
This is according to Tatiana Siegel of the Hollywood Reporter. Citing a source “close to Scorsese,”Siegel reported that the legendary director “originally eyed Joker as a potential directing vehicle.” This was prior to Phillips going to Warner Bros., where he provided “his own take on the nihilistic villain.”
Siegel said that Warners wouldn’t comment on the matter, while Scorsese’s rep claimed he didn’t think about directing Joker. Instead, the source said Scorcese only “considered producing.”

Though he didn’t get involved in the Joker project, it’s been widely reported that the parts of the film were inspired by some of Scorsese’s blockbuster movies such as Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy.
At any rate, both Joker and The Irishman are shaping up to be among the top films in the year 2019. So there shouldn’t be any disappointment from anybody in that Scorsese didn’t end up directing the first live action film that focused squarely on the Clown Prince of Crime.
The Irishman is most likely the last film for Pesci as well, and who knows if we’ll see De Niro, Pacino and Scorsese in another project together. So those that wanted Scorsese in Joker should be at peace in that he spent time directing another blockbuster of his very own.
