Michael Douglas, Sean Penn, and Colin Firth Had 25-Year-Old On-Screen Lovers When They Were 53

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that Hollywood has some gendered double standards when it comes to the way that leading actors are portrayed. While shows like Grace and Frankie have made a decent challenge to the status quo, parts for older women have been few and far between for much of Hollywood’s history. The same cannot be said for male actors, who often continue to get leading roles at far older ages than their female counterparts.

What’s worse, older men are frequently paired with much-younger on-screen love interests. While there are plenty of real-life May-December romances and love can certainly blossom across age gaps, many people call out this trope on the screen because it helps perpetuate unrealistic beauty and age standards for women than men in Hollywood simply don’t face as they age. Three Hollywood A-list stars appeared with 25-year-old on-screen love interests when they were all 53 years old — and two of them even appeared alongside the same woman!

Michael Douglas was 53 in ‘A Perfect Murder’

Michael Douglas has had a long and successful career as an actor. According to IMDb, his filmography stretches all the way back to 1966, and his career has included several successful films. He was at his peak throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. Appearances in dramas like Wall Street (1987) and Fatal Attraction (1987) helped define him as dark, serious, and ready to take on emotionally-filled roles.

In 1998, Douglas once again found himself starring in a dramatic thriller. This time it was A Perfect Murder, and Douglas portrays a savvy Wall Street investor who discovers his much-younger wife has taken a secret lover. Using his wiles and cold, calculated sense of revenge, he pulls the strings to get the lover to murder his wife. At the time of filming, Douglas was 53 years old. The straying wife was played by Gwyneth Paltrow, who was just 25 years old at the time, as Ranker reports.

Sean Penn appeared in ‘Gangster Squad’

Sean Penn is another celebrated actor who has an impressive filmography dating back decades. Starting with uncredited work as an unnamed kid on Little House on the Prairie in 1974, Penn has certainly come a long way. The late 1990s was an explosive time for Penn who made a slew of appearances across both film and television.

His work in 1995’s critically acclaimed Dead Man Walking helped establish his acting credentials, and appearances in films like The Thin Red Line (1998), Sweet and Lowdown (1999)and I Am Sam (2001) showed off an impressive emotional range across genres. In 2013, Penn was 53 years old when he starred in Gangster Squad, a star-studded box office flop that had Penn playing lead bad guy Mickey Cohen, a mob boss who everyone is coming together to take down. Along the way, Mickey’s love interest is played by Emma Stone, who was just 25 years old.

Colin Firth was in a Woody Allen film

Woody Allen — who has himself been known to have some controversial May-December romances both on-screen and off — created Magic in the Moonlight in 2014. The leading man was played by Colin Firth, who has a long filmography dotted with multiple romances. Films like Bridget Jones’ Diary (2001), What a Girl Wants (2003), and Mamma Mia! (2008) have established him as a rom-com staple.

In Magic in the Moonlight, Firth played Stanley, a magician brought in to uncover the potentially fraudulent spiritualist Sophie. While he’s supposed to be bringing down a con artist, Stanley instead finds himself falling in love with his mark. Interestingly, Firth was 53 years old at the time of the filming. The fraudulent spiritualist? She was played by none other than Emma Stone, who was still 25 years old.
