Starz’s Outlander followed the life of World War II nurse Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe) as she unexpectedly time travelled into the 17th century. Throughout her journey of love and war, she met Marsali Fraser (Lauren Lyle), who according to the actress may be splitting from her husband Fergus Fraser (César Domboy) in the upcoming season six.

In a recent interview with Radio Times, star Lauren Lyle gave away a major hint about the sixth instalment of Outlander and claimed: “it continues to just get quite a lot darker.”

Viewers saw a glimpse into what could come in the season five finale when Marsali decided to avenge Claire.

The time-travelling nurse has experienced a brutal rape and Marsali murdered the perpetrator Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) by injecting him with a lethal substance.

After his brother, Richard Brown (Chris Larkin) threatened to get revenge, Marsali could be in for an explosive storyline in season six.

Speaking on her character’s relationship, the actress said: “Marsali and Fergus have always been this fun, romantic couple, young, cool – like the ones that make people laugh and are just really in love with each other and have all these kids.

“And this time in season six, it just got really deep and really dark, they’re at their most tested, – It’s the most tumultuous time that we’ve seen them and their relationship in” Lauren teased.

“Marsali really has, this season – it’s the first time you see her having to step up, and she’s sort of supporting the family and dealing with her own needs.”

As she basically brought war to her family’s doorstep, the upcoming season could see Fergus move away with their three kids for safety.

Although this could be their impending fate, the series released some first-look photos which could see the couple’s relationship tested in another way.

An image was released of Roger (Richard Rankin) carrying a baby out of the water fully clothed and drenched.

Many fans who’ve read the best-selling novels the series is adapted from, believe this child could be Henri-Christian.

According to Diana Gabaldon’s sixth book, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, the couple welcomes a fourth child, born with disabilities.

With the show being set in the 17 century, sadly the locals will assume the child’s restricted growth as punishment for Fergus and Marsali’s sins.

The book details the couple facing backlash from neighbours they thought were friends, those of who insist God is punishing them through their child.

This could also lead the couple to potentially split up as the pressure and reaction could be too much for them.

As the book goes on, it told the story of Fergus attempting suicide as he could no longer provide for his family.

Thankfully, Jamie found him just in time and was able to talk him out of taking his own life.

Although the book continues with Fergus and Marsali moving away and living happily, this might not be reflected on-screen.

Viewers will be glad to know, production for season six ended in May and express.co.uk will be updated with release information.

With Marsali and Fergus’ marriage headed for rocky waters, fans will have to tune into season six to see if they make it out together.

Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Starz and Amazon Prime Video.
