Outlander season six is coming early 2022 on Starz, and speculation is already running wild. From fans looking over all the behind-the-scenes videos for clues or reading through the books for hints, anything could happen in season six. Now there is a new theory suggesting Tom Christie (played by Mark Lewis Jones) will fall in love with Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe).
Warning: This story contains spoilers to the sixth book in the series, A Breath of Snow and Ashes.
Will Tom Christie fall in love with Claire?
During the long wait for season six, many fans have taken to Diana Gabaldon’s original novels to hold them over.
The show is known for staying faithful to the book series, pleasing fans of both the show and books.
Gabaldon has worked closely with Starz to ensure the show’s authenticity, while accepting the need for some differences while adapting the story to the screen.
However, one new theory from fans suggests a major change is coming and it would represent one of the biggest departures from the original novels.
There are some new cast members joining season six, with one being Mark Lewis Jones who will be playing Tom Christie.
Book fans are already familiar with the character as he appeared in the sixth book in the series.
During the sixth book, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) notes how Tom is in love with his wife during an inner monologue.
It is a brief moment in the book and one that can be easily missed, but fans believe it will be emphasised in the show due to the different medium the story is being presented in.
While the series does use narration, it isn’t as crucial or consistent when compared to the books, as the series can often show, rather than tell.
This would mean the potential love triangle for the three characters would need to be literally shown in the series, rather than briefly mentioned.
This would undoubtedly lead to the series bringing more attention to Tom’s love for Claire and potentially making it a major subplot of the season.
Fans on Reddit seem to agree, with one particular user noting the moment in the book..
User theCoolDeadpool explains: “When I read [A Breath of Snow and Ashes] for the first time, I did not at all realise that Tom was falling in love with Claire, until Jamie mentions it in his inner monologue while on the way to New Bern.”
One fan replied: “I can’t wait to watch the next season with my husband as I’ve read the books but he is clueless. He’s going to lose his mind over this storyline.”
Another added: “I certainly hope they would change how this twist is revealed in S6, so much better to leave it until Tom comes to the ship to turn himself in and free Claire.”
It hasn’t been revealed by Starz or the cast how exactly Tom will impact the series or how much the character will be involved.
Though it wouldn’t be a surprise if the showrunners decided to emphasise the romantic elements of the character.
Outlander has become popular for many different reasons, but its romantic core is one of the main aspects fans enjoy.
More will likely be revealed when the first official trailer is shown, though there is no word on when that will be released.
So far, the only glimpses fans have seen of season six are through behind-the-scenes interviews and production stills.
But, with an early 2022 release date, more details should start to emerge in the autumn.
Season seven will commence production immediately after season six, meaning fans won’t have to suffer what has become known as droughtlander again.
When Tom does appear in season six, fans may immediately recognise him from shows such as The Pact, Keeping Faith, and The Third Day.
The star also played Edward Millward in Netflix’s The Crown and Captain Canady in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Outlander season six will premiere on Starz in early 2022. A UK release date has not been confirmed.
