Pirates of the Caribbean: Johnny Depp ‘ALMOST’ didn’t join the Disney franchise
Pirates of the Caribbean has gone down in history as one of the most loved and most successful film franchises of all time. A lot of the film’s success is due to Johnny Depp’s incredible portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow. The eccentric character instantly caught the attentions of viewers within the first few scenes of the film. However, Depp himself explained that he almost didn’t jump on deck for the film at first.
Over the course of the film’s production, a lot had to be worked out.
With Disney eager to get their first blockbuster franchise off of the ground, all they had so far was the name of one of their theme-ark rides: The Pirates of the Caribbean.
And it is because of exactly this that Depp was extremely reluctant to dive into the franchise first and foremost.
Speaking to SreenSlam back during the promotion of the Curse of the Black Pearl, Depp discussed his “reservations” about joining the film.
“Initially, when they came to me it was just the name – Pirates of the Caribbean,” he explained.
“Then, of course, the memory of the theme park ride.
“There was no concept at that time – or at least nothing that they said to me.”
He added: “So, early on I just wanted to wait a while and see where they were going to go with it.”
Despite these reservations Depp heard who was writing and directing the upcoming film, prompting him to jump at the chance to work on the film.
He continued: “And when I heard that they had Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio on to write it – the guys who wrote Shrek.
“And Gore Verbinski to direct it… I knew we were in good shape.”
And thankfully he did, as the franchise would simply not work without him.

Throughout the five films so far in the franchise, each of them have had their own challenges.
One of these challenges in Salazar’s Revenge was the weather conditions, which were supposedly quite treacherous.
But, according to The Things, Depp alleviated these problems with his own money.
The publication claimed Depp spent more than $60,000 on coats and jackets for the cast and crew to keep them safe and dry.
Depp has not publicly commented on this story, but fans are confident he has always looked out for those working alongside him over the years.
Unfortunately, it sounds like the star will not be appearing in the upcoming sixth film in the franchise.
Instead, rumours have surrounded the arrival of Harley Quinn star Margot Robbie taking on the main role in the new and rebooted Pirates of the Caribbean films.
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is available to watch on Disney Plus.
