Queen of the South showed season four on USA Network last year but only became available to watch on Netflix back in June. The crime drama continued to follow the story of Teresa Mendoza (played by Alice Braga) and her rise to power. But like the previous series, there were plenty of obstacles along the way.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Queen of the South.

Teresa’s feud with Judge Lafayette (David Andrews) continued and resulted in a very unexpected death.

As Javier Jimenez (Alfonso Herrera) murdered the judge’s nephew, he wanted to seek revenge and did so against Teresa herself.

He had a bomb planted in her car so when her and Tony Parra (Adolfo Alvarez) got inside, there was a massive explosion.

Teresa eventually woke up from a coma but Tony died in the incident.

But there was some good news by the end of the series as Teresa had secured a deal with drug dealer Oksana Volkova (Vera Cherny).

She has strong connections with the Russian mafia in New York where Teresa is eager to expand.

This new found partnership therefore means her empire can now expand even further, leading her closer to reaching her destiny as the ultimate queenpin.

But whether the the future which was seen in the first series will come true in season five is yet to revealed.

USA Network confirmed earlier this year that Queen of the South will be back for a fifth season.

As filming had to be halted back in March due to the ongoing pandemic, it is unclear when it will return.

But it is now likely Queen of the South won’t be back with new episodes until summer next year.

In terms of more seasons past series five, this is also very much up in the air.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, co-showrunner Dailyn Rodriguez said there has been no confirmation on if there will be a season six of Queen of the South.

She said: “We have no idea. We don’t have a pickup [from the network] for season six. We have no idea what’s on the cards.

“We’re just so thrilled. We’re just taking it day by day, thrilled that people are responding to the show like this right now.

“We’re so happy that people like what we’re doing and we’re really proud of it.”

While season six has not been confirmed, Rodriguez did confirm to Express.co.uk that she had an “overall plan for Teresa’s arc”.

Rodriguez said she knew where Teresa would end up but did not give any hints about the future of the series.

From the sounds of it, the creators of the show are hoping for more seasons following series five.

If the show continues to attract viewers on its return, it is likely there will at least be another series of Queen of the South yet to come.

Queen of the South is available to watch on Netflix.
