Rick Stein has been cooking up a storm for almost five decades and is one of the UK’s best known chefs. His TV show Rick Stein’s Secret France follows the 75-year-old as he travels around the country tasting some of its finest cuisines. The BBC series is halfway through with Rick exploring the towns of Burgundy and Auvergne and their hearty dishes.
Who was TV chef Rick Stein’s first wife?
Rick Stein was married to Jill Newstead who works as an interior designer as well as his restaurant business partner.
They married in 1975, the same year that Rick launched his catering career and opened their Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, Cornwall, which remains open today.
Rick and Jill went on to have three sons, Edward, Jack and Charlie, who are now all grown-up.
While their careers all differ, their children have all worked alongside them at some point.
Rick and Jill’s eldest Edward is a sculptor but has also helped with the renovation of the Winchester restaurant and the Cornish Arms in St Merryn.
Jack has followed in his father’s footsteps, working as a chef after travelling around the world to hone his craft and now runs a cookery course at Rick Stein’s Cookery School.
Their youngest has been given the role of director of wine and drinks at all of the Stein family restaurants.
Rick and Jill’s children have found success but their relationship, on the other hand, did not end well.
The celebrity chef met Australian Sarah Burns, 20 years his junior, in 1997 who worked as a publicity manager for Australia Gourmet Traveller magazine.
They went on to have a five-year affair before Jill found out and divorced Rick in 2007.
Rick and Sarah tied the knot themselves in 2011 and despite the dramatic circumstances, he still runs restaurants with his now ex-wife.
He has previously opened up about meeting Sarah and what happened after their secret came out.

Explaining the situation in his memoir Under a Mackerel Sky in 2013: “Nothing, I sensed, would ever be the same again: I’d crossed a border into another land.
“What happened between us was no longer a question of right and wrong. It had to be.
“Nobody guessed. In 2002, I moved out of the family home.
“That same year, my son Edward married his girlfriend Kate. The wedding was enchanting but I went to it feeling like an outcast.”
The synopsis for Rick Stein’s Secret France season one, episode three reads: “Rick Stein reaches the mid-point of his meander through France as he continues exploring Burgundy and practises a little entente cordiale with a chateau owner who cooks him sorrel soup straight out of the garden.
“He then arrives in the Auvergne, famous for hearty dishes celebrating the finest salers beef and Cantal cheese.
“No one goes on a diet here! In his Provencal country kitchen, Rick cooks Cantal bourriols, buckwheat pancakes with farmhouse egg and cep mushrooms.”
