Daily Star’s Inside Hot TV newsletter sees Ed Gleave send you telly’s hot takes straight to your inbox every Sunday

The Circle viewers were left doing a double take during Tuesday's season premiere, when a certain famous face popped up – Hunter from Gladiators.

Landing in an apartment with his two adorable pet dogs, James Crossley, who previously went by the nickname Hunter, revealed he was going to be catfishing on the show.

The 47-year-old was a fixture on primetime television in the 90s and was considered to be the Ultimate Gladiator, with his co-star Ace coming a close second.

Two decades later and James is as muscular as ever, taking part in the new series of The Circle in the hopes of conning his competitors with a false identity.

James posed as a catfish named Gemma, pretending to be the Yorkshire-based NHS nurse in the hopes of beating his rivals in the competition.

Filling viewers in on his famous history, he said: "Some of you might remember me many years ago as Hunter from Gladiators."

Meanwhile, over on Twitter, viewers were in meltdown as they recognised their 90s hero on the screen, with many hoping he'd win the series.

One exclaimed: "Wtf IT'S HUNTER!!!!!"

"Just watching #TheCircle and hunter from gladiator is on it. He used to be my favourite gladiator," added a second.

And a third chimed: "Anyone else go ‘OMG HUNTER FROM GLADIATORS!' as soon as James appeared?! He's looking good!"

"No way Hunter from gladiators is in the circle, this is bringing back childhood memories 90s kid," a fourth weighed in.

In nail-biting scenes, James got his first opportunity to swindle his rivals this evening, joining in on a chat conversation while posing as Gemma.

With his rivals warming to Gemma, James got voted in first place in the popularity ranking, proving he's a serious contender to bank an eye-watering £100,000 in the final.

Will James get rumbled by his co-stars, or can he successfully pull the wool over their eyes and win the series?

The Circle continues tomorrow at 9pm on Channel 4.
