The Larkins will be returning to ITV for the first Christmas special, on Christmas Day. Inspired by the characters from The Darling Buds of May, the heartwarming family will be bringing joy and surprises once more. Joanna Scanlan, who plays Ma Larkin in the series, teased some unexpected surprises this Christmas.
In the village during the festive period, there is talk of a pantomime to entertain residents.
On a darker note, there is an ongoing spate of burglaries leaving everyone on edge.
PC Harness (Barney Walsh) is left to find the perpetrator, meanwhile, the Larkins have their own challenges ahead of them.
Mariette Larkin (Sabrina Bartlett) and Charley (Tok Stephen) are moving to the next stage of their relationship.
Pop (Bradley Walsh) and Ma are thrilled to have them back for Christmas and Charley’s family arrives to meet the Larkins.
But sadly the village is left without lighting and heating following a power cut and chaos descends.
Joanna Scanlan, who plays Ma Larkin, said: “I think you think you know what you are going to get.
“And I don’t think you are going to get what you think you are going to get out of this Christmas special.
“I will not say a word specifically but there are lots of twists and turns in it.
“But the one thing I think it really does is it genuinely does remind you what Christmas is about.
“What it really is about. As well as giving you, of course, I hope, a lot of laughs and pleasure along the way.
“But it’s got a twist, to say the least.” Actress Bartlett said she was “definitely very excited” to be involved.
She added: “It’s so great to be back working with everybody again, it’s a wonderful, eccentric, mad village.
“It’s just so much fun. I’m very excited.”
Going into more detail about the future of The Larkins, season two is also in the pipeline.
Simon Nye, who wrote the series, said: “If it doesn’t get easier the second time around, you’re doing something wrong with a cast like that.
“Every village should have an over the top thespian, we have got one of those.
“So I won’t go through them all but it’s quite a village to be stuck in, really.”
Pop actor Bradley Walsh went on to praise all of the guest cast, including Seeta Indrani who plays Miss Chand.
He also celebrated Selina Griffiths and Tony Gardner as Norma and Alec Norman, who appear in the festive special.
First look images for the upcoming Christmas special show Ma and Pop looking concerned as the spate of burglaries continues.
Yet they remain on hand to provide love and support to the villagers at this difficult time.
Norma and Alec look disgruntled as they find themselves falling victim to the spate of crime.
Meanwhile, Mariette and Charley are cosying up for the winter, but their romantic journey will not come without its hiccups.
The Larkins at Christmas airs on ITV on Christmas Day at 9pm.
