The Last Kingdom season five will be airing on Netflix soon and it marks the end of the historical drama. The fourth season introduced King Edward’s (played by Timothy Innes) eldest son Aethelstan (Caspar Griffiths), who was the heir to the Wessex throne. In the final season, he will be played by Harry Gilby, and Express.co.uk has all you need to know about how old the character will be.
How old is Aethelstan in The Last Kingdom?
The Last Kingdom season five will be the final season of the series and fans were heartbroken to learn it would be coming to an end.
The fifth instalment will follow Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Alexander Dreymon) as he raises Aethelstan to become a fearless leader.
His reign is under threat by Edward’s father-in-law, Aethelhelm (Adrian Schiller), as he believes his grandson Aelfweard (Marcell Zsolt Halmy) should be king.
In season five, Aelfweard is played by Ewan Horrocks and he is expected to give Aethelstan a run for his money.
Aethelstan was just a small child in the season four finale, so the final season will see a huge time jump.
While Uhtred is expected to be in his mid-50s by the final season, Aethelstan is expected to be in his late teens or early 20s.
The series is based on real historical characters and Aethelstan was a real Anglo-Saxon king from 924 to 927.
He is believed to have been born around 894, meaning he was 30 years old when he first became king.
With this in mind, the beginning of season five should be set a good few years before this moment in history.
So Aethelstan is expected to be in his early 20s as his father Edward is still king of Wessex.
The official Instagram account for The Last Kingdom shared a photo of 20-year-old actor Gilby as Aethelstan.
He is quoted as saying: “It’s not my reputation men wish to test” and it was captioned: “Reputation is everything”.
Fans took to the comments to share their thoughts on an older actor taking over the role.
One said: “Wow he actually looks like Edward… little bit like Timothée Chalamet too lol.” [Sic]
Another said: “Uthred nurtured him well I guess!” Uhtred was left in charge of looking after Aethelstan at the end of season four.
Edward’s mother Aelswith (Eliza Butterworth) had fallen ill and she was no longer able to take care of him.
Knowing the throne of Wessex was in danger, she handed him over to the Dane Slayer to teach him how to stand his ground.
Another fan commented: “Wow, he looks so much like Edward! Casting directors on point again.”
They are hoping he is given the opportunity to become king before the series comes to an end.
One Reddit user said: “This actor looks exactly like how I pictured Aethelstan when I read the books. Great casting with this one.”
Another fan added: “Makes me even sadder we only get this last season after seeing this. I love this casting.”
Season five will be based on Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer from The Saxon Stories.
There are 13 books in total and viewers were expecting the series to cover the remaining stories before it ends.
Considering this, they are worried about how much of Aethelstan’s story will be told in the final season.
Another viewer said: “Unfortunately I do not think they will have much time to develop his character since we are going to have only one more season.”
The Last Kingdom seasons 1-4 are on Netflix now.
