The One Show's Alex Jones got emotional on Friday night’s instalment of the BBC show as she prepared to head on maternity leave.

The 44 year old host is pregnant with her third child with husband Charlie Thomson – a baby girl.

On Friday night, as Alex hosted her last show before her maternity leave, she was shown a video that had been made by her fans, friends and family as they wished her luck.

The video included messages from Alex's husband, her parents, Jason Donavan and other colleagues.

Alex's co-host Gethin Jones also read out a message from a viewer, Pauline, who said that she had helped to ease the "trials and tribulations" of the past year amid the pandemic.

The Welsh beauty was overcome with emotion and began to shed tears.

She said: “Oh you know me I cry over the slightest thing. Honestly being here is just superb, I loved doing it every night and it's really hard to go away.

"I know it's the third one but it's really hard to go away."

She continued to say to viewers: "I just want to say, if I've missed anybody a big thank you to everybody who's knitted lovely little gifts for the baby.

"There's about 24 cardigans, she's gonna be in cardigan heaven!"

She added: "Honestly, I loved every minute, it's very hard to leave..

"Thank you Geth for this week as well, it's so nice to end the show with you, somebody that I know so well. And hopefully I'll be back in the Autumn."

Alex looked incredible for her last show in a red printed mini dress from Zara.

She showed off her incredible pins as she teamed the dress with red strappy heels and wore her brunette hair down around her shoulders.

Alex also revealed that she won’t be sitting on the show’s iconic green sofa again, as the BBC show is having a revamp.

Sharing a snap of herself and Gethin on set, Alex wrote on Instagram: “And just like that it’s time to say goodbye to the show temporarily and get ready to welcome our little girl.

"Thank you to everyone who sent their best wishes tonight. You’ll know that I’m prone to a good cry on the show at the best of times but seeing those messages at the end, especially from mum and dad and Charlie really set me off.

"Thanks to our viewers for helping keep me sane during this last year and a half and for the warm welcome every night. I’ll miss being on that sofa at 7 and of course, the brilliant team who work so hard behind the scenes.

"That is actually the last time ever that I’ll sit on that particular sofa as we are having a bit of a revamp over the summer hols.

She finished her post with: “Feeling full up with love, gratitude and chips: Xx."
