The Umbrella Academy season two has now been released on Netflix. The character of Mom, AKA Grace (played by Jordan Claire Robbins), became a widely popular character after the Netflix Original series was released online back in 2019. Mom starred in every episode of The Umbrella Academy season one alongside her ‘son’ Luther (Tom Hopper) and waitress Agnes (Sheila McCarthy). Her backstory makes for interesting reading after Robbins’ character left fans around the world confused with her ageless appearance and emotionless demeanour. Now, with season two confirmed, Mom could be back soon. Everything was revealed explaining why the Hargreeves’ numbered children’s mom acts in the way she does as her backstory is revealed later in the show.
Who is Mom in The Umbrella Academy?
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Umbrella Academy
Grace is the ‘mother’ to Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Number Five (Aidan Gallagher), Vanya (Ellen Page), Ben (Justin H Min), Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Diego (David Castañeda), and Luther – also known as The Umbrella Academy.
The Umbrella Academy’s Mom isn’t actually their birth mother, however, but is instead a robot developed by their adoptive father, alien-turned-billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore).
Netflix viewers had been left baffled as to why Mom didn’t appear to age from the flashbacks to the present day.
The fact she was a robot was revealed in episode three, Extra Ordinary, when Diego deactivates her.
Robbins’ character’s backstory was explained in episode nine, Changes, and provided an insight as to why Reginald took the decision to have her programmed.
WHERE IS THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY FILMED?
In episode nine, Vanya had become aware of her overbearing supernatural powers.
Grace’s ‘daughter’ had been told throughout her life she was ordinary and did not possess powers like her adopted siblings.
In reality, it turned out Vanya’s powers were much more superior and dangerous than those of her brothers and sisters.
When Vanya exhibited these powers as a child, she would end up killing nannies and carers, prompting Reginald to develop the indestructible Grace.
Creating Grace was just the first step of preventing Vanya’s powers from taking control of her life.
Vanya’s powers soon became so overwhelming, Reginald made her sister Allison use her power as The Rumor to convince her sister she was normal.
When Vanya discovered this later in life, she attacked Allison, cutting her throat and leaving fans fearing Raver-Lampman’s character had died.
WHO STARS IN THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY CAST?
Reginald also had Grace made so he could spend time on his own business ventures as opposed to caring for the children, with his lack of an emotional attachment to any of the academy evident throughout the series.
Mom developed loving bonds with a number of the Hargreeves children, none more so than Diego – similar to their relationship in the Gerard Way-written comics.
Diego made the decision in episode three to deactivate Grace after she seemed oblivious to a gunfight with time-travelling assassins Cha Cha (Mary J Blige) and Hazel (Cameron Britton).
Castañeda’s character was clearly emotional at Grace’s deteriorating state, telling her while he switched off: “It’s going to be okay.”
The pair’s emotional attachment was evident once again in the season finale when Diego had to be physically prevented from running back into the crumbling house to save his robotic parent.
DOES THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY CREATOR THINK ALLISON AND LUTHER ROMANCE IS ‘INCEST’?
Mom was left in the rubble of the Hargreeves’ home when the apocalypse struck, leaving her future on the show and a season two appearance in doubt.
Speculation surrounding season two was rife as ever prior to Netflix’s renewal with fans predicting a time jump in The Umbrella Academy and the potential appearance of the other children born on the same day.
However, Robbin’s co-star Min, who plays Ben, had left fans fearing The Umbrella Academy season two was cancelled after a series of cryptic tweets, but the fears have been quashed by the renewal.
One fan theory even hints at the introduction of Number Eight in another series of The Umbrella Academy.
The season two cast could include Mom and a number of other characters who met their demise in the first series, including The Handler (Kate Walsh), Pogo (Adam Godley), and Leonard Peabody/Harold Jenkins (John Magaro).
Grace also features in the iconic dance scene on The Umbrella Academy in the first episode.
