Virgin River season three is on Netflix now and the latest outing was full of dramatic twists. Mayor Hope McCrea (played by Annette O’Toole) did not feature at all in the flesh in the new season. Instead, she appeared via video calls and ended up in hospital in a medically induced coma- has her ultimate fate been sealed?

Will Hope die in Virgin River?

Virgin River’s latest instalment saw Doc Mullins (Tim Matheson) reach the end of his tether for many reasons.

Not only was he facing a serious medical dilemma, but he was also deeply worried about the welfare of his ex-wife.

Hope and Doc had just rekindled their relationship when fans discovered she had left the town to visit her elderly aunt.

They expected her to return throughout the season, but she only ever appeared in video calls with Doc.

At the end of the series, she was involved in a car accident and was put into a medically induced coma.

Here are three clues suggesting she could die in the next season.

Doc’s relationship with Muriel

While most of Doc’s friends were sad to hear Hope had been stranded with her aunt for so long, others were happy she was out of the picture.

One of her friends, Muriel (Teryl Rothery), has shown an interest in Doc from the outset and she is Hope’s biggest rival.

Hope believed Doc had formed a romantic partnership with Muriel in season two, but he proved her wrong.

However, with Hope now out of the picture, Muriel once again swooped in to flirt with Doc.

She almost went too far in the third season and her friends warned her she would only get hurt.

But with Doc now in a vulnerable position, she could use this to her advantage, using Hope’s death as the catalyst.

Calvin tries to kill her

Some theories have suggested Jack Sheridan’s (Martin Henderson) nemesis Calvin (David Cubitt) caused Hope’s crash.

He made clear to Jack he was willing to hurt anyone Jack cared about in order to get revenge.

Jack had ratted him out to police regarding his illegal marijuana farm on the outskirts of Virgin River.

He almost caused a car accident involving Brady (Ben Hollingsworth), so he could have done the same to Hope.

Knowing how much Jack cares about Hope and Doc, killing Hope would be the ultimate act of revenge.

Hope’s absence from season 3

As Hope did not appear in person for the whole of season three, fans have questioned whether this will be the case for future seasons.

Actress O’Toole was unable to be a part of the show this year due to the coronavirus pandemic and travel restrictions.

As she was unable to get to the film set, the creators formed a clever way to keep her in the show.

However, if restrictions continue to be a problem, she may be forced to stay in a coma long-term or her character may die.

Hopefully, this will not be the case and she will be able to return properly in the fourth season.

Fans continue to have mixed opinions on Hope’s character, with some hating how she treats Doc.

However, viewers expressed their concern when they discovered she had been severely injured in a car crash.

She was driving back to Virgin River to attend her best friend Lilly’s (Lynda Boyd) funeral but never made it home.

Fans have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts, with one saying: “Love it! So many questions. Now to wait for season 4. PS please don’t let Hope die.” [Sic]
