The Last Kingdom season five is in the making for Netflix and the series is based on The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell. Fans of the Anglo-Saxon drama were heartbroken to hear it would be coming to an end after five seasons and they are keen to see how the story wraps up. Express.co.uk has all you need to know about when the final outing can be expected.
Is The Last Kingdom cancelled?
The fourth season of The Last Kingdom aired in April 2020 and the series was renewed for another season three months later.
Sadly, in April 2021, it was announced that the series would conclude after the latest instalment, with Uhtred star Alexander Dreymon sharing an emotional message.
He said it had been a “wonderful journey” playing the show’s main protagonist and executive producer Nigel Marchant thanked the “loyal fanbase”.
The fifth season will be based on books nine and 10 of Cornwell’s 13-part series – Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer.
Filming for season five wrapped in June 2021, and the final outing is now in its post-production phase.
When is The Last Kingdom season 5 out?
An official release date is yet to be announced, so there is still some work left to do.
The series is renowned for its immense battles and a lot of skill is involved in creating the action-packed scenes.
Fans will struggle to go by the previous seasons’ release dates, as they have all arrived at different times.
The first three seasons aired in October, March and November respectively, with season four dropping in April.
However, there is an indication of how long the post-production process could take.
Judging by season four, filming wrapped in October 2019 and arrived on Netflix six months later.
With this in mind, fans could expect season five of The Last Kingdom to come out in December 2021.
As it is the show’s final season, it could make for the perfect Christmas or New Year treat.
The release date should be announced a few weeks before the series airs, so fans could expect it in the next month or two.
In the meantime, fans have been keeping up to date with the latest developments via the show’s Instagram account.
Photos of the season five cast have been shared, with the latest image showing a much older Aelfwynn (played by Phia Saban).
The photo includes a quote from the daughter of Aethelflaed (Millie Brady), saying: “I am a woman of royal blood.”
Saban is one of the new additions to the final season and her co-stars gave her the warmest of welcomes.
Aelswith actress Eliza Butterworth said: “My stunning grandbaby! @phiasaban Aelfwynn.”
Meanwhile, Aelflaed actress Amelia Clarkson responded with a series of emojis, and Aldhelm actor James Northcote said: “Mercia’s MVP.”
Fans also took to the comments to ask when they can expect the final season to arrive.
One said: “I can’t wait for season 5. Please Netflix put me out of my misery and give me something.”
Another commented: “At this point I’m going to have to start from season 1 again when 5 comes out cause I barely remember some of the characters.”
A third said: “I see it now this season is going to make us feel old it’s the last season and I hope they give us a good story and ending. I hope Uthred has finally found happiness.”
The Last Kingdom seasons 1-4 are on Netflix now.
