Jamie Dutton (played by Wes Bentley) raised suspicions in the last season of Yellowstone when he finally discovered he had secretly been adopted after all this time. After potentially striking up an alliance with his real father, Garrett Randall (Will Patton), the father-son pair could work together to take down John Dutton (Kevin Costner) for good in the fourth season of Paramount’s Western epic.
The upcoming fourth season of Yellowstone could feature the return of a huge guest star who only briefly appeared at the end of season three.
Seasoned Hollywood star Will Patton portrayed Garrett Randall, Jamie Dutton’s biological father, and viewers are already petitioning for his return.
Jamie made the shocking discovery that his adoption had been kept from him when he unearthed his birth certificate and realised he wasn’t the son of John Dutton.
Although John maintained his years spent raising Jamie gave him the right to call himself his father, his distraught adopted son went in search of his only living biological parent.
While he wasn’t exactly thrilled by what he found, Jamie and his father Garrett shared a moment together and implied they may have formulated the attack against John in the closing minutes of season three.
The next episodes will hopefully narrow down the list of potential suspects of those who may have orchestrated the attacks but, until then, fans were left wanting much more from Yellowstone’s latest guest star.
One viewer recently took to Reddit to express their hopes for a better chance to explore Jamie and Garrett’s unconventional relationship when the series finally returns.
User catch-the-next-wave criticised the series, posting: “Right off the bat, I really dig this show and think the acting, cinematography and world-building are all top-notch.”
“But I think the show’s writers don’t know what to do with Jamie and probably never will.”
Showrunner Taylor Sheridan has weaved a sprawling family saga over the last three seasons, but some felt last season’s narrative felt somewhat rushed and uneven.
However, if the writers manage to put all their stock in developing Jamie’s storyline even further in season four, Sheridan may be able to deliver Yellowstone’s finest hour later this year.
The fan continued: “My main gripe is we didn’t get enough time with Jamie and Randall, as well as Jamie processing the truth about his birth.”

“It all felt so rushed and not very well-thought-out. John and Beth get to be tender and vulnerable with their loved one.
“Why shouldn’t Jamie get a few more episodes where he actually gets to be human with his biological dad?”
Jamie’s revelation in the latter half of season three hit viewers like a tidal wave, but John Dutton’s wayward son had little to no time to actually process the fact his entire life up to this point had been a lie.
Beyond an aggressive conversation with his adopted father, Jamie simply let the news wash over him and hasn’t fully been able to confront his past demons.
Unless, of course, he took Garrett’s advice to ‘kill the king’ and take out John Dutton in the season finale, giving him the power to do with the vast Yellowstone ranch whatever he pleases.
The same viewer also pointed out Will Patton’s appearance continues his trend of appearing as a rival for fellow Hollywood legend, Kevin Costner.
They wrapped up their theory and said: “Will Patton rules, and it’s nice to see him complete the ‘I Hate Kevin Costner’ Trinity, after No Way Out and the not-nearly-as-bad-as-everyone-says The Postman. He better be a series regular.”
Viewers can now only hope Taylor Sheridan embraces Will Patton’s potential and fully utilises the actor’s strengths in Yellowstone’s upcoming fourth season.
Yellowstone will return with season 4 in 2021 on Paramount.
