The fourth season of Yellowstone is well on its way, and viewers are still none the wiser to the fate of Beth Dutton (played by Kelly Reilly) after last year’s staggering finale. In the meantime, a new theory could finally explain one of the Paramount series’ most perplexing family mysteries.

One perceptive Yellowstone enthusiast thinks they’ve finally cracked why Beth’s mother Evelyn Dutton (Gretchen Mol) treated her so poorly in the show’s flashbacks.

Evelyn has briefly appeared throughout the series as a cold-hearted parent to her and John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) only daughter.

However, her appearances have been relegated to flashbacks as John’s wife was crushed to death by her horse in a horrific accident in 1997.

Her small yet impactful role in the modern Western drama has invariably shown her being tough and callous towards teenage Beth (Kylie Rogers).

Fans will have to wait and see if any more flashbacks explain their strained relationship any further, but a new theory has proposed the upcoming Yellowstone prequel could also reveal more.

Set to premiere on December 19, around midway through the mainline series’ fourth season run, Y:1883 will star Tim McGraw and Faith Hill as the original Duttons.

A recent comment on Reddit has explained why the family’s origin story could provide some vital background information for Evelyn and Beth’s feud.

In a post paying tribute to Mol’s performance in the series, user klaise1 asked: “Why does she hate Beth? Because she hates herself???”

“She’s just jealous,” another Redditor, Massive_Safe_3220, replied in the comments.

“See, in the 1883 script her side of the family are from Salem…yeah, that Salem.

“She is essentially a witch with ‘future seeing’ abilities. She is treating Beth with such disdain because she knows Beth will end up with Rip.”

Unfortunately, details about the upcoming series are sparse, so this fan’s claims the Duttons originally hailed from the Salem of the infamous witch trials are currently unsubstantiated.

Even so, their explanation could provide some valuable insight into the reasoning behind Evelyn’s hatred of her own child.

They went on to suggest Y:1883 could untap some of the show’s hidden symbolism behind the Duttons’ troubled relationships with one another.

In contrast to the Dutton’s Salem origins, they continued, ranch manager Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) could also have some surprising roots.

“Rip’s bloodline of the, In Old Norse, seiðr [is] a type of magic practised in Norse society during the Late Scandinavian Iron Age.”

“The practice of seiðr is believed to be a form of magic relating to both the telling and shaping of the future. Bottom line…if someone stole your Rip, you’d be a b***h too.”

This rather outlandish theory proposes Evelyn harboured secret feelings for Beth’s intermittent boyfriend and John’s surrogate son, Rip.

Seemingly, their two supernatural connections would have linked them together, were it not for Beth’s interference.

This theory could be too much for some viewers to wrap their heads around, but they can tune into the new series this December to find out whether or not it holds water.

Yellowstone season 4 will premiere on November 7 on the Paramount Network. Y:1883 will premiere December 19, 2021 on Paramount+.
