BBC Midlands Today presenter Nick Owen opened up about returning to work after battling prostate cancer, saying he was “fragile” but getting better.<\/p>\n
After having surgery earlier this year for extensive and aggressive prostate cancer, Nick is relishing his return to Midlands Today.<\/p>\n
Speaking to BBC Midlands reporter Ben Godfrey, Nick explained: “I am feeling pretty good really thank you.<\/p>\n
“After a turbulent few months and very excited really to think that I am going back to work because it means the return to normality.<\/p>\n
“At one stage you wonder if that is ever going to happen, so I am a bit fragile still but better than I have been in the last couple of months, this is a landmark time for me it really is.”<\/p>\n
READ MORE <\/strong> Win a pair of tickets to The Coronation Street Experience<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Ben went on to reveal to Nick: “You won’t know this but I contacted Prostate Cancer UK, the charity, today [and] they’ve had a massive increase in the number of contacts made to their specialist nurses.<\/p>\n “Their online checker, which is a way you can go and check symptoms, they have now had over 1.5 million people complete that checker and they say a lot of that drive is as a result of what you said.”<\/p>\n Overcome with emotion and tearing up, Nick expressed: “[I am] Blown away… gosh. I am very moved.<\/p>\n “It and it has done some good, it seems to have done and I am thrilled, that was the whole purpose really, of telling the world. More info<\/p>\n After announcing that he had been diagnosed with cancer, Nick was flooded with support on social media.<\/p>\n He put out a short message to thank his fans for their support and said: “Hello, I would just like to say thank you to all of you who’ve got in touch via social media after I revealed my prostate cancer story.<\/p>\n “Tens of thousands of you have watched the films that were put out and that is truly amazing. Now if they help to save just one life, that will be so worth it.<\/p>\n “The response has been truly phenomenal and I gather that loads of men already around the country are now seeking prostate tests.<\/p>\n “So, thank you very much that is really good news and it is really good to hear, thank you.”<\/p>\n
