A BBC newsreader who was told she wasn’t going to make it to her first wedding anniversary after her aggressive cancer returned six months before her big day has now celebrated her 20th year married.<\/p>\n
Clare Runacres, 52,\u00a0 who works on Radio 2,\u00a0\u00a06Music and 5Live, said it was a ‘miracle’ to reach the milestone.<\/p>\n
Sharing a photo with her husband Mike Ramsden on their wedding day to Twitter the newsreader wrote:\u00a0‘Six months before this photo the cancer I’d had at university had returned. It was aggressive.’<\/p>\n
‘There was no further treatment. We got married very quickly, not knowing how long we’d have. We didn’t think I’d make our 1st anniversary. Full of love and tears. Surrounded by our closest friends and family, we put our fears aside and danced til dawn.\u00a0<\/p>\n ‘Even now I can’t look at the photos without feeling that raw emotion. To reach 20 years feels like a miracle.’<\/p>\n Clare was first diagnosed with cancer aged 20 while attending university and had surgery to remove a tumour, though her doctors told her there was no form of treatment to prevent the cancer from spreading.<\/p>\n ‘Chemo and radiotherapy doesn’t work on the cancer,’ she told The Washington Post, ‘You just have to hope it doesn’t spread, which for most people, it does.’<\/p>\n Nine years later, when the newsreader turned 29, the cancer returned – this time, however, she was told by doctors that the majority of patients with her diagnosis would die within six months.<\/p>\n After Mike proposed to Clare in April 2003, the couple decided to set a wedding date for September that year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Before their wedding day, Clare underwent a second operation to remove the new cancerous mass.\u00a0<\/p>\n Although the surgery was successful, Clare anticipated that it would spread again, as it had the first time.\u00a0<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 52-year-old Clare, from London, is best known for her soothing voice as she reads the news on BBC Radio 2, 6 Music and 5 Live<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n BBC Radio presenter Clare Runacres revealed in an emotional post celebrating 20 years of ‘miracle’ marriage after being diagnosed with aggressive cancer before the wedding\u00a0<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Clare has expressed feeling blessed to have reached the significant 20-year milestone in marriage, with the radio host saying: ‘To reach 20 years feels like a miracle’<\/p>\n However, the couple went on to have a family, with the BBC star giving birth to three babies within four years – who all have the same birthday.<\/p>\n She added, ‘Basically, I was planning my funeral when I was planning my wedding. From then on, I measured out my wellness on milestones that my children made. The milestones I’ve seen have been magical.<\/p>\n Expressing feeling blessed to have reached the significant 20-year milestone in marriage, the radio host said: ‘To reach 20 years feels like a miracle.’\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Clare extended the message personally to her husband, adding: ‘Mikey, thank you for taking a chance on me. You’re the best person I know. You are my miracle.’<\/p>\n She wrote an additional word of advice for people who have been diagnosed with cancer, particularly forms that could be aggressive or resistant to treatment, writing: ‘For those living with cancer – keep hoping, believing, dreaming.’<\/p>\n
